Joy Factor Flower Farm

Directions

Joy Factor Flower Farm I am a newbie flower farmer in the hills near Peterson, Iowa. My goal is to spread that joy by growing and selling beautiful, fresh flowers.

The "Joy Factor" is the feeling I have when strolling the hills and woods of our farm, enjoying God's creation.

So much was packed into this day. I laid out and staked down more landscape fabric and then used the template Rick Zylstra made for me and a torch and burned what felt like a million holes in it, so that I will be ready to plant out my Sunflowers, Zinnias and Gladiolia bulbs tomorrow. I had a new garden helper today, Stormy the cat. He talks way too much and was constantly under foot. ❤️ Rick accidentally let Daisy and Smokey escape their pasture and they ran like the wind! It is more difficult to round up two instead of just one, but it's doable. After supper we took a side-by-side ride and got to see a deer, turkeys, pheasants, an owl and the new c**t in the neighborhood.

This is how my seedlings are looking. Everything is looking great except my herbs, they are looking really, really dead! My tomatoes are looking sad. Too much water? Possibly. I fertilized them all tonight. I now smell like dead fish and seaweed, which is the type of fertilizer I use. Some of my tulips were ready too early, so I brought them in and enjoyed them myself. The rest will be at our first farmers market of the 2026 season! We will be at the Lemars, Iowa market next Saturday, May 9th. I am excited for this new season of markets!

These pictures tell a story. If you look closely at the two pictures of dirt, it may not look like much, but that is my daffodil and tulip bed. You can also see hoof prints running through it. I am glad that the flowers have not yet emerged, or they would have been trampled. While Rick was working in the pasture, he left the gate open and Smokey decided to have some fun. I don't worry too much when he gets out. If two cars a day go buy on our gravel road it's a heavy traffic day and he never goes to the road anyway. He was feeling all studly, which he is not, and pranced and rolled all over the fields. He was a muddy mess but he sure had a good time. Eventually, we took the side-by-side out to find him and bring him back. He was a little disappointed that the fun was over, but he cooperated nicely.

Spring is just around the corner, and I am excited to learn more in my second year of flower farming. I started my first seeds, those which take the longest to get to the blooming stage, indoors on February 17. Big fail! What did I learn? I put them on the warming mats right away but not the grow lights. Since we moved last year, I hadn't put my shelves and lights back together, they were still in the storage shed. I reseeded those that failed and many others on Friday night, March 6th. I immediately moved them to the heat mats and put them under the lights. Guess what? Many of them are emerging already! Yay! So far, I have started several varieties of Snapdragons, Yarrow, Delphinium, Feverfew, Statice, Ammi, Mountain Mint, and Spearmint. I am also presprouting Anemones and Ranunculus. Those require a completely different process. I soak the corms in warm water for 3 or 4 hours and place them root down in soil trays. and put a lid on top. They like cold and darkness until they sprout. Nothing much happening with them yet, but I am hopeful.
