Our Story
Todd and Christi Petersen were first drawn to the Petoskey area in 1999 when their first child was an infant. It reminded them of their childhood locations. Todd began a residential Construction company. Christi opted to take a break from teaching to raise a family.
Todd and Christi began in 2011 when God put it on their hearts to teach their four children about resourcefulness, hard work, integrity, gratefulness, generosity and contentment. Maple Moon became a family business. With God orchestrating many miracles to make this happen, and Todd and Christi spending every last penny they had, they produced their first commercial batch of pure maple syrup in the spring of 2012.
With approximately 4,500 taps on 28 acres, Maple Moon brings in over 80,000 gallons of sap in March and April to produce a yield of approximately 1,600 gallons of syrup.
In 2015, they became America's First and ONLY Maple Winery. Even though Todd and Christi were not wine drinkers, God put people in their path to create an opportunity to “tap” into a new concept. While many wineries combine various ingredients to create something new, it's very rare to use maple syrup because of the cost. Maple Moon ferments the sugars naturally found in the maple sap/syrup instead of the sugars found in grapes. The base wine is dry, but they use maple syrup (of course) in their other varieties to sweeten it to perfection!
