Some calves arrive quietly. Others arrive looking like they’re already ready for kindergarten. 😳😂

This big girl made quite the entrance! When her mama’s labor wasn’t progressing as it should, Izzy Raes recognized the issue right away and took action. With help from Claire DeBoover, a little extra TLC, and a well-deserved water break for mom, both cow and calf are healthy and doing great.

The photos don’t quite do it justice, but we included a size comparison with Claire and another newborn calf. Let’s just say one of them understood the assignment when it came to growing before birth. 🤣

We’re incredibly thankful for team members like Izzy and Claire, whose experience, attention to detail, and dedication help ensure the best outcomes for our animals every day.

Yesterday’s answer: In a perfect weather world, we’re hoping to get at least 950 acres of corn planted this season! 🌽 Thanks to everyone who took a guess- we loved reading the comments.

Today’s dairy fact comes from these two little cuties.

Did you know cows have best friends? Research has shown that cows form strong social bonds and often choose to spend time with the same herd mates. They can become stressed when separated and are often calmer when they’re with their favorite companions.

Looking at these two, we’d say they’ve already picked their best friend!

Question for you: What’s the longest friendship you’ve had? Tag your best friend below! 👇

Just like that we’re back from our hay harvest “break” to watching the sunset from the planter.

What’s your best guess at how many acres of corn we’ll be planting this season- tell us below! 🌽👇🏼

We’re quite literally wrapping up the first alfalfa cutting of the season today!

After alfalfa is chopped, it’s hauled to our bunk where we use some of our largest tractors to continuously pack it down. Packing removes as much air as possible, which helps preserve the feed and prevents spoilage.

Once the bunk is full, we cover it with a giant plastic sheet (think industrial-strength Saran Wrap!) and weigh it down with tires to create an airtight seal. This allows the alfalfa to ferment and stay fresh, providing high-quality feed for our cows throughout the year.

Today’s job: making sure every bite counts.

🥛 June is National Dairy Month and today is World Milk Day! 🐄

Did you know there are only about 25,000 dairy farms left in the United States, and just 2,700 of them are here in New York State? Yet those farms help provide milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, and countless other dairy products enjoyed by millions of Americans every day.

The average dairy farm produces enough milk to feed thousands of people each year, and New York remains one of the top dairy-producing states in the nation. (American Dairy Association North East)

This month, we’ll be sharing a behind-the-scenes look at life on our farm- the cows, crops, equipment, family, and hard work that go into producing wholesome dairy products.

Whether you’ve been following us for years or just found our page, thanks for supporting farm families like ours.

The wind is whipping which makes for a good drying afternoon. On to the next field!

First cutting is underway!

With this beautiful break in weather we started mowing alfalfa for the first time this season- one of the most important crops we grow for our dairy cows. Alfalfa is packed with protein and nutrients that help keep our herd healthy and producing quality milk, and we’ll typically harvest it at least four times throughout the growing season.

But alfalfa does more than feed cows. Because it’s a perennial crop with deep roots, it also helps protect and improve our soil by reducing erosion, holding nutrients in place, improving soil structure, and naturally adding nitrogen back into the ground for future crops.

Healthy soil → healthy crops → healthy cows 🥛🌱

UPDATE - The calves are HOME SAFE! We are so grateful to our local community, the ag community and law enforcement for all of the assistance in helping get our heifers back to us. The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is working on leads and we look forward to the full prosecution of anyone involved. We're so grateful and relieved! ❤️🎉

This is a post we hoped we'd never have to write. 💔 We had 17 calves stolen from our calf facility on Bliss Road very early Sunday morning. Our primary concern is the health and wellbeing of these calves and having them returned safely. The perpetrators appeared to drive west on Lockport Road toward the Alabama Hotel/Holley Farm intersection after leaving our facility. If any neighbors have cameras that catch passing traffic, we'd really appreciate if you could check for a truck hauling a cattle trailer passing between 1-3 am on Sunday. Cattle industry folks, we'd appreciate if you could keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell calves that fit this description or with new animals that showed up overnight. The calves are the approximate age and size of the calves in the photo - 5 month old Holstein heifers. Their ear tags look like those in the photo, they have an electronic ID button tag and 1 or 2 large floppy tags. If you have any information that could be helpful, you can contact the Genesee County Sheriffs office. Again, we just want our calves back safely and are very concerned about their wellbeing. Your help and prayers are appreciated.
