The Master's Hand Farm and CSA

The Master's Hand Farm and CSA The Farm offers organically grown vegetables, maple syrup and honey through a CSA, farmer's market in Phelps or purchase directly from the farm.

The Master’s Hand Farm (CSA Program) was started in 2009 by Tom Mareth and is located on St. Louis Road just outside of Phelps, Wisconsin. Currently, there is one acre in production with plenty of room to expand in the future. Tom spends most of the daylight hours on his farm. He raises and cares for free range chickens (eggs), milking cows and beef cows, pigs, two cats, 4 bee colonies, his Lab S

adie, multiple work buildings and his own saw mill. The Master’s Hand Farm produces a wide variety of healthy, chemical free vegetables. They include kale, rutabagas, turnips, beets, onions, beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, pumpkins, cabbages, squash, zucchini, potatoes, peppers and other naturally grown, healthy vegetables. Many of the farm’s vegetables come in several varieties. The Master’s Hand Farm is dedicated to providing healthy, organically vegetables to the folks in the Phelps area and to introduce and encourage area residents to buy locally grown, chemical free produce. The educational aspects of growing, preparing for the table, and appreciating the nutritional benefits of the farm’s produce will continue to be an essential element of our farm’s goals. Produce, maple syrup, honey, when available, can be purchased at a reasonable cost at the Saturday morning farmer's market in Phelps during the growing season, through the CSA or, you can stop out at the farm to get it directly from Tom. You may call ahead to hear what veggies are ready to harvest and can have your order ready to pick up if you choose.

The Master's Hand Farm's bees came 1 day early. Tom and I and our bees had a 50 degree afternoon to feed them sugar syrup and pollen cake to get them ready for a nectar flow later this Spring/Summer. There are some early flowers and trees they can get to on Tom's farm.

Our four 3 # bee packages should arrive from the west coast on May 17. We will hive them and begin feeding sugar syrup and pollen cake supplements to increase their numbers and so they can feed their queen Royal Jelly as she begins laying eggs. The worker bees will be gathering nectar when trees and flowers bloom and, then, begin their work of cross pollinating farmer Tom's plants as they flower. Tom has started many of his vegetables indoors, using only organic seeds, as the ground temperatures have been warming. The Master's Hand Farm, along with its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) will, once again, be a part of the Saturday morning Phelps, WI Farmer's Market. There is still time to enroll in the CSA. Or, better still, stop at the farm for a look around. Hope to see you all during the 2014 growing season.

WHAT IS A CSA? A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly allotment of produce. As a member of a CSA, you receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as the satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. You also gain the added benefit of receiving fresh, local produce that has been grown in a way that is healthy for both you and the environment.

A CSA is about the relationship between the farmer and the consumer; with this relationship comes an understanding of the quality of the food, where and how it is grown, and a peace of mind knowing that it comes free of any harmful chemicals; it is the way God intended it to be. In signing up for a season’s worth of produce, you are taking a risk with us, saying we’re in it together, whatever the season brings we’re there for you; it is an arrangement that has benefits for everyone involved.

Although it is not required that members spend time on the farm, a helping hand is always appreciated and you are always welcome to come see how things are going throughout the growing season.
