RAISING THE LARGEST CHICKEN BREEDS ON SMALL FARMS AND BACKYARDS
Here’s a fresh look at eight of the world’s biggest chicken breeds — ideal for farmers and hobbyists who want reliable birds for eggs, meat, or beauty.
1. Jersey Giant
A calm giant with broad shoulders, strong bone structure, and sleek black, white, or blue feathers. Its large head holds deep-set eyes and a medium comb, all atop thick, slate-colored legs.
2. Brahma
Tall and striking, Brahmas feature feathered feet, full saddle fluff, and light, buff, or dark plumage. Their pea comb and expressive brow give them a noble presence.
3. Cochin
Soft and rounded, Cochins wear dense feathers from head to toe. Their small head and gentle face sit atop a compact, cloud-like body with extra fluff around their legs.
4. Cornish
Short but powerful, Cornish chickens have tightly packed feathers, wide shoulders, and muscular legs. Their head is sharp and compact, with bold eyes and a rugged expression.
5. Malay
Impressively tall with long legs and tight feathering, Malays carry a confident, upright stance. Their head is angular and strong, often highlighted by a beetle brow.
6. Orpington
Fluffy yet firm, Orpingtons are known for their thick plumage in buff, black, or lavender tones. Their rounded body, medium comb, and smooth curves make them both practical and appealing.
7. Plymouth Rock
Well-balanced and friendly, this breed shows off distinct barred feathers in black and white. They have clean yellow legs, expressive eyes, and a strong overall frame.
8. Australorp
Glossy and graceful, Australorps have deep black feathers with hints of green in sunlight. Their wide body and quiet nature make them excellent layers with lasting charm.
