The nursery is back, and full of plants. Perennials, trees, and shrubs to be specific. Come out on Saturday during farm stand hours (9-1) or shop on the website for pickup at the farm.
We have a lot of native plants, and some non-native favorites of mine and yours - I’m not religious.
We don’t have seedlings, because in the past it’s never been worth my effort to raise them for the few people who want to extend their veggie season through fall, so checkout for their fall sale dates for veggie seedlings.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: fall is the best time to plant a perennial garden. Transplanting is a shock for plants, and while they can get through the stress, giving them a head start to get their roots established ahead of cooler temperatures makes them more resilient to the early hot temps we have in the spring, when they’re trying to protect themselves and conserve water during those hard times. You’ll be rewarded with a lot of spring growth by getting them in the ground in the coming months. Our frost date is more important for tender veggie seedlings who can’t tolerate freezing temperatures. Perennials, trees and shrubs can withstand those temperatures even when placed in the ground in very late fall. So, get your plants in the ground this fall and focus on weeding in the spring.

The online plant nursery is open! Head over to https://www.germantownkitchengarden.com/s/shop to peruse. Pick up your order as soon as the next day, here at the farm. Read all the instructions so you know how to alter your pickup date if you wish to, and to bring a box or tray so we can keep ours. So many things will be arriving each week as they emerged from the soil or become available by wholesalers, so check back often.

In person shopping here will begin Saturday, April 6th. The plant nursery will be open on both Saturdays and Sundays thru May, but if you shop online you can pick up your order during the week, too. Don’t hesitate to email or call me with questions.

There is one more thing I want to ask of you. If you love this farm, or you even just like it, please consider leaving a review on google for us. This place has been a word of mouth, hard to find, “I had no idea you were here” kinda business for years, and I love that. What I would also love is to have more people who love to garden find out that I’m here, and buy plants from me. Or just wander in for a coffee on a Saturday morning and take in the atmosphere. Spend some time on an urban farm and love it like we all do. So, please, if you have just a few minutes to spare, I think it will help

This is Edgeworthia chrysantha, which I do post about every year because, I mean, look at it. It’s not even open yet and it’s glorious. I sell this in the nursery whenever I can find it, and I was thinking about the nursery, and about how maybe I didn’t mention this year that people who sign up for a farm stand share receive 10% off in the nursery all season. So, if you need a little incentive to push you towards the signup form, that’s what tangible thing I’ve got to offer, aside from all the fresh, locally grown produce of course, and eggs so good you’ll be ruined for all other eggs.

Hazardous weather outlook: the walls will come tumbling down around you. The back wall of the garden came down last night nearly in its entirety. If you know anyone who can expertly advise me on how to proceed with the cleanup/suring up of what’s left of this structural disaster please send them my way. Thanks.

One week away! Please do come out to celebrate this holiday season with us- we have 45 vendors including foods and drinks, ceramics, textiles, soaps and other luxurious body products, little and big baskets, jewelry galore, knitted things, candles and honey and syrup and teas and dried flowers and more jewelry and more ceramics and all kinds of illustrations and prints and original artwork, and wreaths and winterberry bunches and and and….dare I discuss the positive weather forecast? No. I dare not. I’ve kicked this last week off with a stress dream in which a half hour before we open I realize I have not mapped out a place for any of the vendors and am in no way otherwise prepared to welcome you in. So, I’m right on schedule! See you in one week and then I close the gate til April. For real.
