Breeding time is upon us here at the ranch and today we are putting the stud rams in with their respective breeding groups. We have added a couple of powerful yearling rams to the stud battery & they are pictured below. Both rams are substantial fellows and we are excited about them. Introductions coming soon.
Did I mention it’s terribly smokey here from all of the wildfires surrounding us?

We had the highest number of ewe lambs born this year ever in comparison to the number of ram lambs born. Although there's been a severe shortage of buck lambs here on the ranch this season, the plethora of ewe lambs has afforded us some outstanding young ladies to keep back in the flock. Combining data collected from barn records along with visual appraisal and handling, here are just a few of the 2026 gals that will be retained...most wouldn't stand still long enough for a cell phone picture but I did manage to get a snapshot or two. We're excited about their future as individuals and as a group! Shearing to happen soon. February born.

Here's to the Red, White, and Ewe!!! 🇺🇸

I think she thinks she's special.
We think so too. She's an elegant young lady with all the right stuff. And talk about Suffolk character ... wowzers! An end of February 2026 twin ewe lamb, she's already turning heads. In addition to all that stuff that's fun to look at and handle (yeah we do that around here), she's been growing like a house afire and so far has been in the top end of the 'gainers (yeah, we do that stuff around here too).
Sired by "Hickok" and dammed by a great older "Mother Lode" daughter who has only given us ram lambs until now. If mom was ever going to give us a ewe lamb, she must've been saving up for this one because she's definitely a good one! She will be fun to watch grow and develop over time.

Meet “Ewetopia”. The Original Plan? The Midwest Stud Ram Sale, Sedalia. But … that plan fizzled as our spring took on a path somewhat akin to Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. Complete chaos. Yearling rams that were to accompany her and a pen-mate, had tragic accidents. Killed by or injured by one of the stud bucks. The End Result? She stays home. Honestly, I’m not unhappy about putting this powerful gal back in the flock but it sure would have been fun to show her. She is a no-holes kinda girl. Really an excellent and exciting female. Sired by “Hickok” and dammed by a “Jack of Diamonds” (Reno Reserve Grand Champion Ram a few years ago) granddaughter. Diamonds sired big, correct, productive sheep with a stellar hip on them. Many generations later, that hip structure is still evident in Ewetopia. Looking forward to seeing what the future brings with this lady.

"The Old Ram Cometh". Our senior stud ram, "Western Underground" pictured here at 5+ years of age. Still looks good & is still making great lambs. He's still the kingpin around here, or so he thinks. Occasionally, we have to remind him who the top dogs really are. 😉 All kidding aside, this guy does a great job for us, siring high quality, growthy well made lambs that thrive in a variety of management systems and environments.

"Codigo" is one of our SALE yearling rams that's just hanging out waiting for the snow and rain to stop so that he can get his spring haircut. He's a big buck with mass, size & scale and pounds to share. He also stands on pretty dang good bone and on top of that he's handsome and fun to look at to boot. He's sired by "Western Underground" going back to "Mother Lode" of old Luxford breeding and is dammed by Prairie Rose 2221, a stud caliber ewe out of the Dombek stud buck, "Cogburn". The Cogburn daughters have been impressive and have continually been putting high quality lambs on the ground for us.

We should have this guy ready for further inspection in about a week after he sees his barber. Stay tuned!

Just for fun … because we can all use a little fun here and again. Arguably my favorite photo ever taken at the Nugget All American - Reno show a few years ago while hanging out in the barn after the show. Cooper Perkins, son of Matt and Andrea Perkins, was making friends with our Reserve Grand Champion Ram, who was a really cool, easy going ram. Kids and sheep just seem to naturally attract to one another. Photo credit to my sis-n-law, Lisa.

Pictures coming soon of our 2026 lambs….there’s some dandies….stay tuned.

The Boss, otherwise known to her friends and family as “Opal”, Prairie Rose 1702, has entered the drop pen in the barn. These type of ewes are worth their weight in gold. She’s a large capacity, dimensional, long lived, productive female that has earned her status and our admiration here on the ranch. She pops out top end lambs every time she lambs, has a 200% lambing and weaning rate and earns a living on grass from spring until fall when the snow flies. She is also the dam to “Hickok”, one of our stud rams. Oh, and did we mention that she is 9 years old? We think this grand ol’ dam looks pretty good for being 9 years old. And by the looks of it, she’s got another set of multiple lambs on the way. Will it be twins or triplets? Stay tuned.
