At Sasquash Pumpkins we strive to introduce new offerings. We consistently have three dozen or so varieties, but not necessarily all pumpkins.

Ten years ago there was a rough hail storm that damaged the roof. That same year I experimented with luffa (natural cleansing sponge). I grew six main vines in Granna’s flower bed. I trained them up the rails of the porch and up the columns below the roof line. By the time the roofers came, they had to pull off vines that had grown up to the second story! It was a lot cooler on the shaded porch that year and we had a lot of 12” sponges. This year we will offer luffas at the stand.

Also new to the mix are pumpkins on a stick and pepper pumpkins. As the latter implies, they are actually peppers. But pumpkins on a stick are eggplants believe it or not. And they are perfect for creating fall vase displays. The pepper pumpkins can be mixed with other ornamentals as a colorful display.

Ten years ago I lost most of my bees. I had a hive body at the garage. I saw one or two bees around Easter nosing at the entrance. On Passover, I was surprised to find a fully occupied deep hive body. Turns out the one or two were scouts. That hive thrives to this day. Colonies have personalities. I don’t dare go near that established hive (pictured tall hive) without protective clothing. They will give me a country butt whoopin’!

Well, we decided to build up the ‘hood. We went over to The Bee Barn in Paducah for a couple of nucs (a mini-hive if you will). Got back and installed them into each of their new homes.

Now, the early flowers of the buckwheat cover crop planted a few weeks ago will get many visitors. And we are staged for the 1,000s of pumpkin flowers and sunflowers following that to get pollinated. Of course, my honey addiction will benefit. Three cups of honey-sweetened pour over every morning.

A couple of us are in Charleston this week. Amazing adventures; amazing food. (Excellent seafood at a crab house last night).

The one thing we miss when we are away though is our home milled, home made bread..all types. Restaurants most places are lacking in this department. We mill six different types of wheat including “ancient grains” like einkorn, khorasan (Kamut) and spelt we get from Amish country. However, we do grow, dry and store our own meal corn. Phyllis makes a most excellent cornbread with it. It is also used in our grits, hominy and English muffins. Our corn is a 170 year old variety that is so tall it is a fitting “Sasquatch” variety. I’ve have older pictures at 11’ feet tall and will take more shots of the current crop in July. Come out for a visit in July and get your own picture if you desire.

So what do we do with our down time when not tending pumpkins? Well, there isn’t any down time. We like the lifestyle of watching the land bring forth as it was designed.

It’s going to be a great fruit year. Good thing because most of our freeze dried snacks are depleted. But, to bring the crop to harvest, there will be much tending to do. We like it. “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Apples, peaches, blueberries, grapes and maybe the first decent picking of cherries.

A couple weeks ago we posted about breaking ground and getting our buckwheat in the ground to help build up the soil. Well, the seed is spread in the field, tilled in, and we’ve gotten some good rain to kick start it.

Here at the farm, we try and be conservative as possible with what “unnatural” things are put on the field. Most of our three dozen or so varieties of pumpkins are not only pretty to look at, you can use them in cooking as well. With that in mind, we want you to feel comfortable with handling and using your pumpkins as you see fit - even eating them without worrying what is in them. So we use healthy choices in building the soil up. That includes (starting this year) using products from Charlie’s Compost in Calhoun, KY. A couple days ago I grabbed 4,000 pounds of top quality, all natural fertilizer and soil amendment from Charlie’s. And I have a big drum of nutrient rich plant “medicine” to ensure maximum plant health as they grow.

(Yes those are turkeys in the background free ranging the edge of the upper pumpkin field.)

Time to get cracking again. Managed to get first pass at plowing the pumpkin fields on April 1, 2026 this year - one of the earliest yet. But, chaos adds up through the winter to manifest the first time you use equipment. Got the replacement disc that broke and will plow again today.

Though it is three months before the first seeds are laid in the ground, there is much preparation yet to accomplish. Beginning with plowing and then sowing both fields with buckwheat. In 6-8 weeks these fields will be blanked with white buckwheat flowers - a great option as a “green manure” to help build the soil up.

In six short months, we will open up to the community.

End of season. Time for kitchen experiments. Spoke with one lady at the stand who said as a child a neighbor always supplied the family with a Porcelain Doll (pink, blocky, flat) for pumpkin pie and soups. Having a few left over, I roasted one at 350. The verdict? Okay, but there are much better choices.

I then moved on to the Queensland Blue (green and looks like a muffin). Results? AMAZING! If you got one from us, roast, scrape out the meat, and freeze flat in ziplocks until soup or pie day.

So as it stands the best pie and soups come from Blue Hubbard (the pod from “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”), Queensland Blue, and then Cushaw (green and white striped and shaped like a gourd). All these are excellent. I have a Thai inspired, sausage pumpkin soup that works well with all these.

Also, still have a few livestock and deer pumpkins at $25 a hundred weight.
