Just returning from our annual trip to Berlin, Ohio - the heart of a beautiful Amish countryside. So we make this annual trip to relax in the beautiful rolling hills that tends to be 2-3 weeks ahead of us in Fall colors. Additionally, there are bulk grocers to get several 50 # bags of true whole wheat and canning supplies, craft shops, antique stores, farmers markets and amazing eateries. I take the opportunity to back haul purchase lists for some of my friends as well. I affectionately call it Amish Disneyland.

I also use the trip to scout emerging new varieties of pumpkins like Mac n’ Cheese pictured below and visit Berlin Seed Company to get a jump on the next year seed needs. Only picked up seventeen varieties because the 2026 seed bins are pretty picked over. I picked up three new winter squashes: Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato Squash, Autumn Frost (both of these a tan acorn-type squash) and Butter Baby which is a compact Butternut. We also picked up First Prize field pumpkin which boasts of 50-300 pound whoppers.

Fun trip (Boomers are easily entertained) but it is good to be home. Just in time too. Lots of stuff to get out of the field and on to the table. It appears as if self pay folks got much of their Fall displays taken care of, but no worries. There are plenty of pumpkins remaining and the weekend starting Friday promises to be perfect. We will also have Happy Squatch Candy and Littlefoot Naturals soap out for those interested.

But..Lots of pumpkins left in the field and the tables for “window” shoppers (no judgement) are stocked again.

So I grow something called a Long Island Cheese (because it resembles a cheese wheel - normally). It is supposed to be a flat stacker. However, this year I got 50% flat, 50% round. Don’t know why. I was curious if the rounds had a cavity suitable for carving. Guess what? It does. Spacious. I only capped it and put the cap back on. That was late evening. Next morning that cap was fused to the pumpkin. Thought to myself “Self that probably means high sugar content.”. So I fired up the kitchen lab and roasted it. Amazing!! The liquid/syrup on the cookie sheet was as sweet as tea and the flesh was tasty. It is ALMOST as good as a Blue Hubbard. Therefore, if you’ve gotten one, don’t discard it after your decoration season. Cook it. It will be awesome for soups, pie and casseroles.

One last thing. REALTORS: Talk to your clients about staging the porch for prospects to see this time of year. This is my neighbor’s place. She is selling this beautiful 5k square “country mansion” nestled on one of the highest points in the county.

Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day! 70s, dry with low humidity. See you out there around 9ish. Tons of all kinds still out there in the field and on the wagon and tables. (Even though the nice lady from The Happy Hen from Cannelton filled up her trunk yesterday.)

Awesome couple of days this past weekend! Got to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones at the stand. One family was grabbing flats like crazy - but there are oodles remaining. We are open daily, Sunday-Thursday, for self pay. My number is down at the stand should you need help and I am delighted to do so.

A few folks had come over from the Sasquatch Festival on Frederica. I guess things were really happening over there. Mrs. Pumpkin Whisperer sold several dozens of bars of her Littlefoot Naturals soap and related items. Pumpkin Pie (from real Sasquatch Pumpkin Farm pumpkins) was the big favorite. She still has many bars remaining, but soon will fire up the lab for her Christmas creations.

So, farm stuff. Back on May 22, I mentioned some corn I plant that has been around since before the Civil War. I got my start from my fourth eldest brother. His father-in-law had some stored in the bottom of a freezer for over 35 years. Yet it still had a >90% germination rate. Those 11’ stalks kids coming to our patch have been playing in is what remains in the field. But the true purpose is pictured. It comes in white, red, and two toned. Doesn’t matter what you plant, all three versions will come up. I grade each cob and shell out for chicken scratch and people “scratch”. Some less desirable ears become part of my dinner place settings of corn and fresh pumpkin for the deer at “select” locations in the woods. The cornbread from this variety is amazing. However, though I grind all the wheat and grains and make most of our bread, my wife makes this wonderful bean soaker. I just can’t match it.

Should end up with about 20 gallons of kernels.

What an awesome evening yesterday was. Great weather, great people, and a beautiful day’s end. Thanks to all those who came out yesterday to the stand.

So Saturday..what to do? If you have the time, come on out to the country and walk the patch… Or, head down to the old Malco theater on Frederica for The Blue Bridge Sasquatch Festival.. Or, do both!

We are open for self pay as of Monday. But I am still out and about should you need help or have questions. I am working on a hut to put the box inside. For now, poke your head in the little red shack. There is a Venmo QR code on the box. Cash works as well. Fill out one of the slips if you can. Friday at 4 and Saturday 9ish to 4ish we’ll be out at the stand to tend to your needs.

What to expect..

1) Respect out neighbors. Speed is 10MPH down the easement. Park on the other side of the hay bales. Even if it is raining, it is solid ground.

2) Feel free to stage your family pictures wherever you like.

3) There is a wagon that has a few pumpkins with pricing relating to size and quality. So, if you find a pumpkin that size and style, that is the cost. You can choose pumpkins wherever you see them, but most folks like to venture out into the field. Many pumpkins are still growing, so watch those vines and don’t trip!

4) There is an upper field where many of the bigger carvers live. Go to the right of the red shack and just beyond the Christmas trees.

5) Wagons and wheelbarrows are for your use. If you have a big load, I’ll be happy to haul you and your treasures from the upper field.

6) Several pumpkins are pre-cut. If you see something you like better, try and get as much stem leading up to the vine as possible. Pumpkins will tend to cure and last longer if you do.

Pumpkinnology part 4. Curing. Ever have the perfect pumpkin and wonder how to make it last to Thanksgiving? Curing can help. Most pumpkins at stands and stores are harvested before they are really ready for “shelf life”. You’ll see many pumpkins in stores that must be culled from the batch because they are rotting. They were picked weeks ago and subjected to a lot of bruising before they could harden.

A fully ripe-on-the-vine pumpkin can be easily determined. Pick a spot on the pumpkin (like an area that won’t be readily seen) and press your thumbnail into the skin. If it easily breaks through, the pumpkin isn’t fully ready. Leave it on the vine and check it in 4-7 days. Or..
Take a fairly mature pumpkin and put it in a dimly lit area below 80 degrees for about 7-10 days. At that point, the skin will be hard (cured) and the pumpkin will last much longer.

We open in a week on September 25 at 4 p.m. to nightfall! Doesn’t cost anything to come out and maybe take a picture of your crumb snatcher amongst the vines. We will be open every Friday evening and 10-4 every Saturday with helpers on site through October. HOWEVER, if those times don’t work, we have a self pay option beginning September 20, 24/7. Cash and Venmo please. Please come out and take some of these flats off me. They’re as big as squatty boulders!

Pumpkinology part 3. So you want to save your seeds from that Big Max pumpkin you bought. Your intent is to try and grow a ginormous one next year. Well. Maybe. Or maybe not. Though many of our varieties are heirloom, planting them along side other types can work against keeping that variety pure. You see, many pumpkins hybridize very easily. Many types will readily cross pollinate and either stymie desirable traits or create something altogether new (in the next generation from harvested seeds). When you buy heirloom seeds, they are mostly grown in isolation from other types (some can be grown without being affected by others). Your Big Max will be fine and develop normally this year if grown alongside the green, flat Jarrahdale. Next year you might have a giant, green UFO.

Just for fun, let me show you a picture taken not too far away from the Sasquash Pumpkin patch in 2023.
Here is the context of the picture. For some personal reference, I am a skeptic. I try to be very thorough when I look into things. When someone makes a claim and says “they say”, I ask “whose they” making the claim. Tell us what you think is pictured.

- 2023
- 65-70' from camera to object.
- Pumpkins for deer are halfway into foreground (keep in mind for you deer hunters).
- Objects are 7’6” in the air in the only window at that height in the foliage. Location of that window determined by multiple reference points on the near and far side of trail. I am 100% positive of the location above the ground.
- Distance between objects is 6-7” and estimated based upon a tree right behind “objects”.
-If a deer WERE standing on its hind legs, it would be 7’6” tall with 6-7” between its eyes. Deer eyes tend to be set more on the side of the head than the binocular appearing “lights” (frontal) as is seen here.
- The ground underneath was disturbed and packed down.
- It hadn’t rained in 4 weeks prior so ground was like concrete.
- The background is a 5-7% slope. From the camera to the top of the hill, the ground rises about 25’. So, it would be impossible for distant flashlights or car lights to appear in the frame. Additionally, there are no roads at the top of the hill.
- We’ve logged well over a thousand pictures with this camera and never had an anomaly or artifice appear in any photo.
