We all should strive to have a day filled with meaningful opportunities to contribute to something bigger than ourselves.

The students and coworkers at Beaver Farm spend their days contributing to their community and beyond. These contributions look different depending on crew, interest, and ability but every single one is valuable. Whether we are harvesting in the garden or volunteering at a local horse farm, it’s always with the hope that we are having a positive impact on the world around us.

The greatest time of year….garlic scape time!!

Garlic scapes are a lot like garlic if it hung out with a scallion for a long time with less bitterness, a hint of pepper, and some grassiness. You can cook them like green beans, make pesto from them, even dry them and make a garlic scape powder to use all year. They’re just absolutely a gift from the earth and we can’t get enough of the satisfying “pop” when we harvest them.

What’s your favorite way to use this underrated flavor powerhouse?

Today we celebrate Jasmine!

Jasmine has had such an amazing school year so this birthday is extra special. This year, she is part of the kitchen and pottery & fiber crews in the morning where she perfects her food prep skills and has really fine tuned her sewing and glazing talents. In the afternoon, she has a varied schedule filled with baking, hiking, and cleaning. She’s also stepped up to take on rolling oats and processing beeswax proving that she is able to meet any challenge set in front of her.

Jasmine is also an accomplished painter and really loves music therapy where she brings lots of enthusiasm. She loves playing uno, disney movies, spending time outdoors, and expressing herself through fashion.

Jasmine is a warm and kindhearted person with a great sense of humor who has really strong connections with her favorite people. She has become incredibly brave this year and the world has opened up as a result. We are so privileged to get to spend the next year with her where the sky is the limit.

Please join us in wishing Jasmine a really amazing birthday!

Caring for animals is an amazing way to learn how to open up and see how you can be helpful to the world around you. At Beaver Farm, students learn to not only help themselves, but to become more community minded and generous in their actions.

Today, we celebrate Matthew!

This is Matthew’s first year at Beaver Farm and it is going so incredibly well. He has found his place in Silver Maple where he lives alongside friends in a big beautiful home where he has so many windows to gaze out and lots of activity to giggle at.

Matthew is in our garden and estate crews and he helps to keep our compost turning day after day. In estate, he keeps our grounds tidy and has become a real wheelbarrow pusher in both realms.

Matthew is the epitome of chill vibes but he almost always has a sly smile on his face which shows his true personality. He’s affectionate and sweet and well loved by everyone around him. He also has a great laugh which we get to hear often as he’s a pretty happy guy.

Matthew loves being outdoors, our farm to table meals, music, getting his hair brushed, and being surrounded by people he loves.

Please join us in wishing Matthew a very happy and very smiley birthday!

Today we celebrate Joe!

Joe is in his first year at Beaver Farm and he is truly loving all of the natural lands we have here. As a birder, there is no shortage of amazing birds to observe, especially outside of his window at Stone House.

Joe is in the garden crew and has recently joined the forest crew with occasional days spent in our kitchen crew making lunches for the entire community. In forest crew, he gets to learn all about trees, animals, and more. We’re lucky he’s so inquisitive because he helps us all learn!

Joe loves being with his housemates, hiking, movies, and joking around with everyone he meets. He’s warm and silly, eager to connect, and never forgets a face. Tonight he is having a pizza party and cake and playing with the new puppy in his house.

So please join us in wishing Joe a very happy birthday on a day as sunny as his smile!

Some of our students find comfort and self expression in creating art inspired by the natural world.

Learning how to be a young adult isn’t just building work skills or applying academics, it’s finding out what truly brings you joy so you can have a fulfilling and well rounded life. We all deserve that opportunity.
