From Clemson University livestock poultry division…
Dear Small & Business Poultry Flock Owners,
Are you and your pets, livestock, horses and poultry ready for a storm?
Will you plan to shelter in place or evacuate with or with/out your animals? Realizing in the worst case scenario you may not be able to return home for weeks once you leave.
Our Emergency Preparedness website has information to help you plan and start getting prepared now – for you and your animals, look under Natural & Tech Disasters -- Hurricanes & Flooding: click here for E Prep
It is never too early to start planning – making lists of what you need to take with you or what you need if you shelter in place ifin case you have several weeks of no power.
Have cages/coops to hold the birds, and bring feed, water, dishes, litter shavings for the cages/coops, trash bags and whisk brooms for cleanup if you are evacuating with your birds.
Contact the County Emergency Management Division of the county you are going to, to see if they know of any sites that can house your caged birds: SC EMD County Managers.
American Red Cross shelters will not accept any types of pets and their pet co-shelters may not accept caged poultry.
If Ag producers experience compromising power outages, they should:
(1) Report it to your power company.
(2) Report it to your county emergency manager/county emergency operations center.
