Curtis brought me home a load of cardboard from a store he does appliance repair for! 🥰 At quick glance, it looks like about 8-10 giant boxes. Today I'll remove stickers, tape, and staples and cut them into 2 feet wide strips. I'm hoping this will be enough to finish my garden paths. This will save me a ton of time in weeding!

At first glance it may look a little chaotic, but isn't that how things grow in nature? A little of this and a little of that and if a volunteer sprouts, I usually let it stay. In this little section you'll find cosmos, marigolds, catnip, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, swiss chard, strawberries, ground cherries, and a baby okra or two. There may even be some purslane whichbis highly nutritious and makes a nice living mulch. When I'm able, I try to plant in polycultures so that I can mimic nature as much as I can.

Just the other day I was so excited about my first broccoli here and today I'm excited about my first cauliflower EVER! It was totally unexpected because the catapillars did a number on the leaves and I could have sworn it wasn't there the other day when I checked. 🤷‍♀️

My first broccoli here! It either bolts or the catapillars get it because I don't use pesticides. I also have a decent head of cabbage. 😍 It's just a little bit, but between low seed germination and the hot, dry spring, it's more than I expected from these cool weather crops. I'm ready to try again in the fall.

I mentioned a few days about making my own bone meal. It's really easy to do. We butchered 4 of our roosters this week. After cooking them, cleaning their carcasses, and making bone broth, I am taking the rinsed bones and putting them in the oven for a few hours at 170⁰ until the bones are dry and brittle. At that point I will grind them in a food processor. The bone meal can be scattered on your garden, but root crops in particular benefit from the phosphorus.

Since there are many rainy days expected, we are switching our focus back to the house! It's been a long break, but we're ready!

Something I had been meaning to mention is that instead of using CPVC or PEX, we are going back to tried and true copper pipes for drinking water. We know it will be more expensive, but the trade off is worth it. Copper is anti-microbial, resistant to chemical leaching, and having less microplastics and volatile organic compounds in our life is always a good thing.

The jewelweed is just about ready to harvest! I will be making a batch of salve for our family and selling the extras. It will be ready sometime in June.

Jewelweed is a natural remedy that neutralizes urushiol oil, the irritant found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac. It contains lawsone which acts as an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory as well as saponins which can aid in removing oil from skin.

My salves are made with my own home-grown herbs, I use minimal ingredients, and don't add fragrance. If you want to reserve a tin, please send me a message!

It looks like a much needed rainy day here. I planted some hazelnuts and mulberries this morning before it really started to pour and found a monarch caterpillar ready to form its chrysalis! It's on a moonglow pear tree and right beside it is some common milkweed. 🥰

We checked on our new hive this past weekend and it's doing great! If you don't know what you are looking at in the first photo, the top yellow wrinkly stuff is capped honey. Below that is pollen. It's by far the prettiest thing to me. It looks like a patchwork quilt. 🥰 And at the bottom we have larva and capped brood. A worker bee is an egg for 3 days, an uncapped larva for 6 days, and finally a capped pupa for 12 days.

Also, our friend blessed us with a second swarm! We will be installing it today. 😍

Does anyone know what kind of snake this is? Depending on the answer, I may not go back in the garden for a little bit. 😅 I've never seen one before, but based on the picture, my best guess is a dekay brown snake? The main color is a pale brown/gray. It's about 12-14 inches long.
