KW Farms TN

KW Farms TN We use regenerative and permaculture practices to raise livestock and grow food organically.

We are a first generation farm nestled in a forest on the Cumberland Plateau in Bledsoe County, TN. We use regenerative practices like no-till, no pesticides or herbicides, and cover crops to improve our soil. As part of our permaculture system, we raise Italian honeybees, American Chinchilla and New Zealand rabbits, and a flock of Bielefelder chickens. We have a beautiful, organic vegetable garde

n and fruit and nut tree orchard, where we use our own homemade compost. We love our small piece of paradise and hope to share it with others.

Recent visitors to our place: a box turtle that decided to dig her nest right next to one of our blackberry bushes; a barn swallow that built her nest in our front porch; a blue-tailed skink on our front porch; and a couple of deer right outside the back of our house.

Domino and Strawberry are back home after a couple of months at Mountain Top Acres (thank you to the Deckers), which allowed our silvopasture to get a good growth of grasses.

A new addition to our garden: a couple of raised beds from scrap wood with an archway out of cattle panels for the cucumbers, green beans, and snap peas. We also planted zucchini, carrots, basil, rosemary, and nasturtiums.

We received our two packages of bees and have installed them. They’re a new breed for us - buckfast bees - that are supposed to be docile, productive, disease resistant, and adaptive to various climates. Now we wait and see …. Happy Earth Day!!

Since it’s been a while, we thought we’d give an update on our very busy early spring here at the farm.

First, we unfortunately lost all of our bees during winter to starvation - we’ve decided to try again and have ordered two packages of bees that will arrive soon.

We also had one apple tree and one mulberry bush die - the apple tree was killed by a vole that ate the roots and the mulberry bush was infested by scale insects so we had to remove it from the orchard. We haven’t decided what to replace them with, but luckily the rest of the orchard looks good.

We’ve also been trying to improve the silvopasture by cutting down more trees (to open up the canopy for more sunlight) and clearing the leaf litter and spent hay so we can re-seed with additional varieties of grasses and legumes to provide Domino and Strawberry with better grazing.

We have two new breeding rabbits (Cooper, who was born here, and Willow, a Chinchilla we got from Lifted Hearts Farm) after retiring and giving away Pepper and Steele to a good home.

We finally got our first harvest of asparagus two years after planting the crowns - we’re very happy with how well they’re doing! In addition, we started seeds for our garden, including tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower.

Our nine hens continue to give us delicious eggs - the ISA Browns laid throughout the winter, but now all nine are laying; we can barely keep up with all the eggs!

Finally, we cleared an area for a future pasture for Domino when we need to separate him from Strawberry and her calf (we’re hopeful that Strawberry is currently pregnant 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽. She hasn’t gone into heat since January and her udder and teats look like something is going on in there — stay tuned!!).

Another couple of inches of snow last night so gave Domino and Strawberry extra feed to help them stay warm. That layer of snow on their backs will also help to insulate them.
