Before the first grape vine was planted, the owners and staff of JOLO Winery & Vineyards sought to set a new standard in wine making and hospitality in the region. Winemaking has been a lifelong dream turned realty for entrepreneurs and wine enthusiasts JW a

nd Kristen Ray. JW spent over 10 years in the food and beverage industry, including owning his own restaurant at 19 years of age and working for two five-star hotel properties. In 2010, upon the successful sale of Learn.com, which JW co-founded and served as Chief Operating Officer, the time had come to trade in his Zegna suit and tie and Ferragamo shoes for a tractor and a good pair of work boots. Kristen was just as ready to leave 20 years of the corporate sales world behind and to store her briefcase and dress pumps in the closet. The search for the perfect place for the winery brought him to the historic Yadkin Valley AVA. The rolling hills, now home to JOLO, are perched over 900 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Piedmont region boasting majestic views of Pilot Mountain. Previously, the vineyard estate had not been used for widespread agricultural purposes due to the rocky soil and hilly nature of the property. However, what is less ideal for farming makes for perfect conditions for world class grape growing. Most of the south facing sections in the vineyard require hand farming as the terrain is too steep for tractors. Thus our goal is to not compete on price but to provide inimitable guest services alongside superior wine production in North Carolina. Being “green” is a key theme for JOLO Winery & Vineyards. Our eco-friendly initiatives include the use of burnt vine clippings and compost for fertilizers, the use of baking soda and hot sauce in place of most insecticides, and the use of reclaimed creek and rain water as the only added source of irrigation for the vines. JOLO Winery & Vineyards is currently accepting event bookings for both indoor and outdoor events for 2 to 300 guests. JOLO has made its mark on the international stage.

At the 2026 New York International W**e Competition, JOLO W**ery & Vineyards earned five Gold or better medals-one Double Gold and four Golds—tying for the second-highest total among all brands represented in the competition’s Gold and Double Gold results.

More than 1,300 w**es from 23+ countries were entered, yet only four brands earned five or more Gold or better medals.

JOLO was one of them.

We’re also honored to be named the 2026 North Carolina W**ery of the Year.

Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, tonight—beneath a full moon.

Now imagine this same location 215,000,000 years ago.

During the Late Triassic Period, what is now Pilot Mountain was surrounded by rivers, floodplains, freshwater lakes, conifers, cycads, horsetails, and seed ferns. Small theropod dinosaurs, similar to Coelophysis, moved through the wetlands while the crystalline quartzite highland that would become Pilot Mountain stood watch.

Today, Pilot Mountain rises 2,421 feet above sea level and roughly 1,400 feet above the surrounding valley. It is a quartzite monadnock—an isolated mountain that endured while the softer landscape around it slowly eroded away.

No Cynthiana vines. No Pilot Fog. No tasting room. Just prehistoric wetlands and Pilot Mountain in the making.

And 215 million years is only one chapter in a story nearly half a billion years old.

From ancient wetlands to modern vineyards, Pilot Mountain, NC, has been watching the world change.

A new weekend tradition begins at JOLO.

This weekend, The Chef’s Circle debuts with Lobster Macaroni: ¼ pound of tender lobster meat nestled in a bubbling three-cheese cream sauce, tossed with imported Italian macaroni, and finished beneath a garlic-herb crispy breadcrumb.

Available Friday through Sunday in limited quantities—only 20 servings prepared.
