We use a type of electric fencing to contain our animals when they are in the pasture. Bigger animals like cows and a well-behaved goat get single strand fencing. Sheep get a net fencing.

The electric net fencing serves just as much to keep them in as it does to keep other predators out. Especially putting 1 month old babies out in the woods, it is good to have a strong protective fence. We have our fair share of time fighting this fence to get it in the ground. Sticks really like to get stuck in the fence and short it out, so it’s a constant battle.

Overall, it is portable and keeps our animals safe.

All of our herd has moved out into grass pens and received ivermectin against one of our biggest dangers.

Our ewes were given a deworming past in preventative measures. We have a heavy deer population that roams our pastures, so this is a necessary feat. This disease starts when a deer eats a larvae infected with P. tenius. The worm eggs are then excreted in their f***s for other ruminants such as sheep and goats to accidentally eat. The larvae can migrate to their [sheep and goat] brains and cause severe neurological issues and even death.

Our oldest group of lambs recently got ear tags and round 1 of vaccinations. This leads into the purpose of these preventative techniques.

The ear tags serve as an identification tool. Farms will use different codes for recognizing the sheep. At our farm, red tags indicate a ram and white indicates an ewe. Some farms use different aspects based on birth year, the sire and dam, medical/birth defects, or whether they were a single, twin, or triplet.

The first vaccine provided to all of our sheep is CDT which is a preventative for tetanus and enterotoxemia. The “C” and “D” are representative of clostridium perfringins type C and D (overeating disease). This results when they get too much sugar in their diets.

In honor of this special goat’s 3rd birthday a couple days ago, we will take this opportunity to share the purpose of having this goat with our herd of sheep.

Eeyore is our bottle kid from a few years back, so he has grown to be extremely tame. He is a leader and helps us load sheep, bring them to new pastures, and is a buddy to the freshly weened.

A goat that partakes in duties similar to these is traditionally known as a Judas goat. Historically the Judas goat helps lead herds of lambs to slaughter. This name is framed off of Judas Iscariot, in the Bible, served as an apostle to Jesus. He betrayed him for money by leading an armed crowded to him which resulted in his ex*****on.

These special goats we used starting in the 1800s and primarily in commercial slaughterhouses.
