There are strange days in life, and there's today. April 2, 2023 in sunny San Francisco.
My very first farmer's market was
May 12, 2012 and after 11 years, today was my last market as owner of Izalco Catering. One of the most difficult things for me as a human has always been Acceptance.
It took me almost a year but I finally accepted that this journey in my life was done.
Most of you probably don't know that after a successful real estate career my life came crashing down with the market crash of '08 which mostly impacted real estate. After working as a waiter for about 2 years the idea of the gourmet pupusa came to me in a moment of meditation.
Little by little the Southwestern pupusa was born, then the Italian, the Mediterranean and a couple of years later the Vegan and the Breakfast pupusas came about.
I started this business with my children's mother and after about 3 years did it on my own. That meant that I had to learn how to make Chicharrón (pork) lol...
I sit here with tears in my eyes but feeling sooooo grateful for this incredible journey. Before I started this business I was losing my house to foreclosure.
The fact I'm writing this from my living room is more than a reason for me to be grateful to the Universe for the divine guidance I've received from above.
I'm not exactly sure what is next but I've learned to have Faith and I'm sure I'm gonna be guided in the right direction as I'm not ready to retire yet.
One thing that I'm sure of, I couldn't have done it without you, my loyal customers in all the different markets, fairs, company and private parties I catered and also Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association and their great staff who gave me my first chance that day in May 2012. I am so deeply grateful to you all for making it happen for me, I enjoyed every moment of it. You not only helped me survive all these years but gave me life as we became like family in many ways. I knew that for sure after I did my first market during the pandemic. After being locked up in my house by myself for 4 months, my depression was gone by the end of that market. It was magical....
Thanks to all of you for making it possible.
This has been a tough winter with so much rain, it's made it hard for me to work but yesterday was a record day for me at the Brentwood Farmer's Market and today was one of my best days ever in San Francisco. That means I leave with a bang! It's like retiring after you win the championship. I feel so blessed and I wish many blessings for you all.
I am also grateful that the people taking it over are a young couple with a tremendous working attitude and desire to succeed please continue to support their business, I promise you the quality won't change.
Feel free to contact me when you want to say hello. I'll always have the same number 925 597 3092.
From your friend,
Jose Vega.
