I can't leave lids off hives for very long before yellow jackets start showing up. Then come the European hornets. Then comes robbing behavior by other honey bees.

This means I have to trust my management up to this point, guess resource stores by hefting, and feed accordingly.

I already miss sweating through bee suits while I struggle to decipher what the bees are telling me, and I look forward to spring and all the hard work it brings.

I haven't been one for long, but I know without doubt or hesitation that a beekeeper is what I am meant to be, hell or high water.

This time of year beekeeping pretty much means resource management... Which means sugar... Not too much, not too little....

This time of year beekeeping pretty much means resource management... Which means sugar... Not too much, not too little.

It also means having liquid and dry feed prepped in advance and hoping the ants don't find it before it's time to put on the hives.

I'm already so dang excited about seeing where I stand in the spring and increasing the colony count significantly.

I've been not posting on here like I should as fall transition has made for busy and distracting times.

But rest assured we are still on target to chase these dreams down.

We've been learning, teaching, working and playing plenty!

250+/- capsules of pure powdered bee propolis straight from our backyard.

The first of many batches.

Bee propolis is full of amazing medicinal properties, and while I don't really want to make a bunch of medical claims on the Internet (I'm no doctor or scientist, just a dang ol weirdo that loves bees) I do encourage you all to research it a bit yourself.

The amount of medicines and foods and products the honey bee has to offer us is truly astounding, and I am very grateful for this jar and what it could possibly do for us.

I know not everyone thinks talking about marital things and fertility is meant for the public square, but I believe in being transparent and vulnerable.

That said:

It's a mighty big privilege and a true blessing to spend my day sweating through a bee jacket and overalls gathering medicine for my wife that might make the difference in us conceiving a child.

I know this isn't a guarantee, but there's some good evidence that bee propolis helps with some of the problems we suspect we might be having on our fertility journey.

Maybe this little gift from our bees will be the last piece of the puzzle we need, cuz it sure would put joy on my heart to shop for tiny beekeepin gear for some little ones.

Big thanks to Miller Bee Supply, Inc. for such a fair price on this awesome piece of equipment I just finished assembling. This resource hive will be an amazing addition to the bee yard next spring and I cannot wait to get it rolling.

Putting this together was a great way to unwind after a long and beautiful Sunday spent with both our church and family, breaking bread and enjoying the company of so many people that mean a lot to us.

Despite the things in our life we wish we could change and weigh heavy on our hurts it is important to acknowledge the blessings piled high on our plates.

Hope y'all's Sunday was at least half as good as ours.

We love y'all, all of y'all, and hope you're chasing your dreams and building beautiful things.

What better way to celebrate my NC Certified Beekeeper diploma showing up than my new 3 layer 4 over 4 palmer resource hive showing up the same day?!

I'm excited to assemble, paint, and add this new style of hive to my apiary. If I can get the hang of it this new piece of equipment will mean a constant flow of drawn comb, brood, honey and queens on reserve to support my production hives.

I'm already so excited for next spring in the bee yard. Maybe I'll add 1 More new style of hive by then to really keep myself overwhelmed.

Here's hoping I can hit double digits in 2027!

Today we preserved some of the harvest from the hobby garden. Pickled cherry tomatoes, dilly beans, okra, and peppers. Canned several jars of green beans.

The young beans were pickled while the beans that stayed on the vine a little longer benefited from the pressure canning.
