🌱✨ We’re more than just plants. And honestly, that’s something we’ve been reflecting on a lot this month.

August is National Black Business Month, and we’ve been feeling ALL the love lately. 🥹💚 From being tagged in posts to hearing your stories about how well your seedlings are growing, your plant-care wins, and the ways Soil Sisters has become part of your growing journey — we are incredibly grateful. 🌿🪴

But if you’ve been following us for a while, you’ve probably noticed something…

We’ve evolved. ✨

Getting our brick-and-mortar was a huge milestone, but building the experience inside it has been just as important.

The plants will always be at the heart of what we do 🌱, but we’ve been listening to YOU. 👂🏾💚

You told us what you loved. You shared stories. You gave us ideas. You helped us see possibilities we may not have thought of on our own.

And now, our shop has a little more for you to discover. 👀👇🏾

Please share! Pitt is having a job fair this Thursday at the CEC in the Hill District. It’s located in the New Granada Theatre. The custodial position at the University of Pittsburgh is lucrative and also union position. All full-time staff receive the same benefits as our faculty members. You never know I may be the person who’s giving you an interview! 🤗 - TaRay

The shop will be open at 1p if you stop be kind to our helper, she’s kind of shy ☺️ 🌱

But we’re all set up at City Books at 908 Galveston Avenue and will be here until 3p🌱

This is literally like a POV from our store in the 1950s❣️

Beltzhoover was where Black Pittsburgh families went when they had earned enough to leave the Hill District but the rest of the city still would not fully receive them.
The South Hills neighborhood developed a significant Black middle class community through the 1940s and 1950s, families who had come north during the Great Migration, worked the mills, saved carefully, and moved up the hill to a neighborhood where the housing was better and the streets were quieter.
They brought their institutions with them. Their churches. Their social clubs. The barbershops and beauty parlors and corner groceries that made a neighborhood function.
Beltzhoover is one of the least documented chapters of Black Pittsburgh's geographic expansion. It deserves a fuller telling.

For more than 40 years 🥳, City Books has been a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s independent literary community. Founded in 1984, it is the city’s oldest independent bookstore and has long been a place where readers, writers, and neighbors gather to discover stories, spark conversations, and celebrate creativity. Today, City Books continues that tradition through author events, its Writer-in-Residence program, and a thoughtfully curated collection of used, rare, and collectible books. 🌱📖

Plants and books have something beautiful in common—they both help us grow. Whether you’re searching for your next great read or the perfect new houseplant, stop by and spend the afternoon with us.

We’ll have:

🌱 A Day To Remember 🌱

This week, during Pennsylvania , we had the incredible honor of welcoming Pennsylvania
Secretary Russell Redding of Agriculture and Secretary of PA Department of Labor & Industry Nancy A. Walker to Soil Sisters Plant Nursery and our future urban farm Tuesday July 13th.

They walked our land, learned about our vision, and saw firsthand what can happen when a vacant lot is transformed into a place that grows food, creates opportunity, and brings a community together.

We were also humbled to receive a Governor’s Proclamation recognizing Pennsylvania Urban Agriculture Week —a reminder that urban agriculture is being recognized as an essential part of our state’s food system.

Urban agriculture is about so much more than growing vegetables. It’s about:
🌿 Restoring neglected land
🌿 Addressing soil contamination
🌿 Increasing access to fresh, healthy food
🌿 Creating jobs and entrepreneurship
🌿 Teaching the next generation where food comes from
🌿 Building healthier, more resilient neighborhoods

This visit was a powerful reminder that the work happening in neighborhoods like Beltzhoover matters. What starts with a seed can grow into food security, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, and community pride.

We are deeply grateful to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture , the Allegheny County Conservation District, Pasa Sustainable Agriculture and everyone who helped make this visit possible. Thank you for believing in our vision and recognizing the importance of investing in community-led agriculture.

To everyone who has shopped with us, volunteered, attended a workshop, donated, or simply shared words of encouragement—this recognition belongs to you, too. Your support has helped us reach this moment.

The work is just beginning, and we’re excited to keep growing.
