Bottled our first fruit mead today - local honey + homegrown strawberries + the last of the wineberries from my childhood woods + Amanda Ruchalski blueberries. Past and present infused into a pretty potent potion.

Finally finally planted my pumpkins and melons. Hopefully the threat of squash vine borers is past, hopefully the heat doesn’t immediately kill them, hopefully the wool mulch helps retain what little soil moisture we have. Hopefully we get some rain soon. Hopefully the well doesn’t run dry. Hope, hope, hope against all odds hope.

The tractor, however, had other plans and now I’m more tired than I started out, stink of diesel, and those little jobs are still not done but hey, that’s farming baby.

Now *that’s* a bouquet.

Why did I wait until this year to grow strawflowers and scabiosa? Why did I take a decade off from growing centauria? A fool, me, but finally, no longer.

Turned a too much bok choy problem into a slightly more manageable but still too much kimchi problem with today and I didn’t realize how much my spirit was missing collective community labor like this. There’s a lot to be said for modern life, but something also about the deep and restorative joy of sitting around a dining room table gossiping, singing along with the music, and working in community towards a shared goal that everyone can enjoy the fruits of and take home when the labor is done.
