🦃 FARM FEATURE: Meet Turkey Lurkey! 🦃

This handsome young gentleman is Turkey Lurkey, our juvenile Narragansett turkey tom—and hopefully a future father here at Painted Deer Farms!

Turkey Lurkey is growing up to become part of our turkey breeding program, which means that someday he’ll be helping us raise the next generation of Narragansetts right here on the farm. 🤎

Narragansetts are a heritage turkey breed known for their beautiful gray, black, tan, and white coloring, as well as their hardiness, excellent foraging abilities, and calm dispositions. They’re also a breed with a long history in the United States, which makes us especially excited to have them as part of our farm.

For now, though, Turkey Lurkey’s main responsibilities include growing, eating, practicing his best tom strut, and generally looking more impressive by the day 😂

We’re looking forward to watching this boy mature—and hopefully meeting some little Turkey Lurkeys in the future! 🦃🌿

So excited that we got a commercial refrigerator to go with our commercial freezer. This means no more playing fridge Tetris with our kitchen fridge when we're storing eggs or proofing bagels! This will also make it a lot easier for temporarily storing chicken after processing, especially since we're planning on running a batch of 100 chickens next spring.

Did you know how easy it is to make your own juice? We do this every summer with grapes and every winter with cranberries. Just add 2 cups of fruit to a quart mason jar, add 1/2 cup of sugar (feel free to adjust this amount to suit your preference), then fill the jar with hot water, leaving 1" headspace. I like to give each jar a good shake after putting on the lid to help get the sugar mixed in. Then water bath for 10 minutes. We let these sit for a minimum of 4 weeks before opening, straining, and drinking. The best part? The spent fruit can be reused in baked goods, teas, or turned into fruit leather so there's no waste.

I'm making this year's white grape juice from some beautiful muscat grapes I picked up from the Historic Folsom Farmers Market.

POV: You head out to collect eggs... and someone has decided she's going to be a mom. 😅🥚🐔

If you've never met a broody hen, here's your introduction: puffed-up feathers, dinosaur noises, and a whole lot of attitude when you dare reach into her nest box.

She may look fierce, but she's just following her instincts. Around here, broody season means egg collection suddenly becomes a full-contact sport. 😂

🌿 A Little Pause at the Farm 🌿

This week, Painted Deer Farms will not be offering deliveries.

Running a small family farm means there are seasons for growing, baking, caring for animals, creating, and occasionally stepping back so we can give the farm (and ourselves) the attention it needs behind the scenes.

We'll be back soon with fresh eggs, pasture-raised meats, homemade baked goods, pantry favorites, and more.

Thank you for supporting local food and for understanding that small farms sometimes need a quiet week to keep everything running well. Your support allows us to continue providing thoughtfully raised, handcrafted foods for our community, and we're so grateful to have you as part of our farm family.

We'll see you again next ordering week! 💚
