Happy Monday, farm friends! 💚 Our weekly preorders are officially open, and we’re getting ready for another week of farm-fresh goodness!

We’re back with another week of farm-fresh goodness from Painted Deer Farms! 🐔🌿🥚

Our weekly orders are now open, and we'll be following our regular Saturday delivery schedule:

📍 Folsom / El Dorado Hills: 8:30–11 AM
📍 Placerville & surrounding areas: 12–4 PM

‼️We are sold out of eggs for this week but we are still accepting orders for baked goods, vanilla extract, and dried herbs.

🤎 THE VANILLA IS BACK! 🤎

After months of patiently steeping, our homemade vanilla extract is finally available again!

There’s just something about homemade vanilla that feels especially perfect as we head into fall baking season. Cookies, cakes, breads, frostings, pancakes… basically, if it calls for vanilla, we’re here for it. 🍪🧁🥞

And while the vanilla is making its comeback, our hens are beginning their seasonal slowdown. 🐔🍂 With the days getting shorter, egg production is starting to decrease, so eggs will be limited this week. If you need a dozen (or a few!), be sure to get your order in early!

❄️ WINTER IS COMING ❄️

For our chickens, winter does mean one thing: a break from laying is coming. 🐔🥚

As the days get shorter and the amount of daylight decreases, our hens will naturally slow down and eventually take a break from laying eggs until spring.

And while it would certainly be convenient to keep the eggs coming year-round, we choose to let our girls follow their natural rhythms. Part of giving our chickens a healthy, happy, more natural life means allowing their bodies to rest when nature tells them it’s time. ❤️

So, at some point this fall/winter, we will stop having eggs available for sale. We don't know exactly when that will happen—it depends on the hens!

We do have a handful of younger hens who are just starting to lay, and because this is their first year, they may continue laying through the winter. But there's no guarantee they'll produce enough eggs to keep our egg supply going.

When the hens finally declare, “No more eggs,” we'll respect the ruling of the flock. 👑🐔

Spring will bring longer days, rested hens, and plenty of eggs again. 🌱🥚

We’re taking a little break from our regular weekly orders this week because we’ll be busy getting ready for the Working Lands Market & Tasting Event, hosted by ! 🐔🌱

If you’ve been wanting to check out Painted Deer Farms in person, this is a great opportunity! We’ll have some of our farm goodies available for purchase at the event, so you can stock up while you’re there. 🥚🌿🥯🍪

The Painted Deer Farms kitchen is gearing up for another week, and pre-orders are officially OPEN through Thursday!

A little heads-up for our egg customers: demand has picked up recently (thank you!! 🥹), so our hens are having a hard time keeping up! Egg quantities will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If eggs are on your list this week, I recommend getting your order in early. 🐓

🌿 From our garden to your spice cabinet.

If there’s one herb we’re never short on around here, it’s rosemary! We’re lucky to have a handful of mature, established rosemary bushes on the farm, and they are easily some of our most prolific producers.

Throughout the growing season, we harvest fresh sprigs from the plants, bring them inside, and dry them low and slow in our dehydrator. Once they’re completely dried, the rosemary is stripped from the stems, packaged into glass spice jars, and ready to make its way into your kitchen.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing the entire process happen right here on the farm—from a plant growing just outside our door to a finished jar of herbs ready for someone’s pantry. 🌱➡️🌿➡️🫙

Rosemary is also one of those herbs I find myself reaching for constantly: roasted vegetables, chicken, breads, soups, marinades…the list goes on.

Our dried rosemary is available in 0.5 oz glass jars and is grown, harvested, dried, and packaged right here at Painted Deer Farms. 🤎

🦃 FARM FEATURE: Meet Turkey Lurkey! 🦃

This handsome young gentleman is Turkey Lurkey, our juvenile Narragansett turkey tom—and hopefully a future father here at Painted Deer Farms!

Turkey Lurkey is growing up to become part of our turkey breeding program, which means that someday he’ll be helping us raise the next generation of Narragansetts right here on the farm. 🤎

Narragansetts are a heritage turkey breed known for their beautiful gray, black, tan, and white coloring, as well as their hardiness, excellent foraging abilities, and calm dispositions. They’re also a breed with a long history in the United States, which makes us especially excited to have them as part of our farm.

For now, though, Turkey Lurkey’s main responsibilities include growing, eating, practicing his best tom strut, and generally looking more impressive by the day 😂

We’re looking forward to watching this boy mature—and hopefully meeting some little Turkey Lurkeys in the future! 🦃🌿
