A moment to note that when we we get deeper into the season that the greenhouse people may transition from the greenhouses to the farm stand to deal with vegetables, they also care for gardens and plants that remain as part of the farm. This is the shout out to the folks responsible. As someone whom has not done much hand weeding or hoeing in the last few years I certainly can admire the effort and creativity that the folks put into the gardens and plant care at the farm and farmstand. It takes as lot of sweat equity to make thing look nice, the green thumb alone doesnt cut it...

People often wonder where the early season bounty comes from during the early weeks of the farm stand being open. The answer is pretty simple: we cheat! We use greenhouse structures more and more to get early vegetables on the shelves when we cant get them by growing them out in the open elements. This odd pair of pictures is shows a trophy crop of vetch and winter rye.Rye and vetch is nothing you will find at the farmstand (although arguably might taste better than kale if prepared properly), rather its is really grown as food for the "soil"- the insects, microbes and life that lives within it and makes the soil more habitable for the strawberries and vegetables. Also known as cover crops, these soil building crops are part of a long term strategy of remediating the damage we do from row cropping the soils. Essentially you take a productive soil out of production for a period of time and re add carbon to rebuild the humus that is used up while producing a cash crop.
