Running hot water! It’s amazing how we take this for granted. To get to this point took an immense amount of effort, and is the culmination of the first phase here at W Ranch. Here are some of the steps this took:
- Identify a freshwater spring
- Dig down and create a catchment with a pipe coming out of it for the water.
- Install a spring box where any sediments could collect and water be diverted if needed
- Dig and install a 1200 gallon concrete cistern to collect the water, with an overflow back towards the creek
- Make a new driveway 2500’ up a slope and make a 80’ long culvert over a stream
- Deliver a small unfinished cabin
- Frame bedroom, bathroom, new windows in the cabin
- Install electrical, plumbing and low voltage in cabin before insulating
- Finish interior walls
- Install new cabinets I built in kitchen, bath and bedroom
- Finish shower and plumbing in kitchen, bath and install fixtures and sinks I made
- Install diesel heater in cabin
- Trench 2700’ up 400’ of elevation (1500” was steep, difficult terrain)
- Install 2700’ of water lines and conduit, plus several valves and a pressure regulator
- Install a 1800 gallon in ground water storage tank (up a 600’ steep slope)
- Install main power to the property (1000’ trench to the workshop, 175’ to the cabin)
- Pull 2700’ of heavy gauge wire for the pump (again, up the steep slopes)
- Install and commission the water pump and control system
- Install the tankless water heater in the cabin.
- Install water pipe heat tape so pipes don’t burst in the winter
