TAKE A SCENIC HIGHWAY 7 ROADTRIP THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND -- and include a stop at the Hollis Country Store!

There’s a reason Highway 7 is known as Arkansas’s Scenic Byway. Stretching from the Ouachita foothills at Caddo Valley all the way to Diamond City on the shores of Bull Shoals Lake, this road trip takes travelers through some of the state’s most breathtaking landscapes, charming small towns, and unforgettable attractions. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, local flavor, or simply the joy of a winding drive through the mountains, Scenic 7 delivers.

Your journey begins in Caddo Valley, just outside of Arkadelphia, where the Ouachita Mountains rise up to greet you. As you wind north, you’ll quickly find yourself in Hot Springs National Park, one of Arkansas’s crown jewels. Take time to stroll Bathhouse Row, soak in the thermal waters, and explore the hiking trails that lace the surrounding hills. North of town, Hot Springs Village and Jessieville give way to wide-open mountain views as you climb deeper into the Ouachitas.

Midway along your trip, plan a stop at the legendary Hollis Country Store, established in 1930 and located deep in the Ouachita National Forest. This fourth-generation, family-owned store has become a true Arkansas landmark, known far and wide for its famous bologna sandwiches, RC Colas, and Moon Pies. Recognized by AAA Magazine as one of the “10 Legendary Spots to Sample Sensational Sandwiches,” Hollis isn’t just a place to grab a bite — it’s a step back in time, where hospitality and history meet.

Continuing north, Highway 7 winds into Russellville and the Arkansas River Valley. Here you’ll find Lake Dardanelle State Park, a haven for fishing and family-friendly recreation. A little further along lies Dover and the gateway to the Ozark National Forest, with towering bluffs, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. Keep your camera ready — the Grand Canyon of the Ozarks, just south of Jasper, is one of the most photographed views in the state.

Finally, your road trip concludes at Diamond City, perched on the shores of Bull Shoals Lake. This quiet town is a paradise for anglers and boaters, offering a peaceful end to a journey filled with mountains, rivers, history, and hospitality. From start to finish, a drive on Scenic Highway 7 is more than a road trip — it’s a chance to experience the best of Arkansas’s natural beauty and small-town charm.

There’s something special about a homemade pie...

Ours are made from scratch by Gena - and while we think they’re pretty enough to look at, it’s that first bite that really matters. Because around here, we believe a great pie ought to taste every bit as good as it looks.

One of our favorite compliments is when someone takes a bite and says:

“This is just as good as my grandma’s.”

And we always smile when we hear it - because we all know nobody makes pies quite like Grandma did!

So if you’re looking for a slice of pie that tastes like the best one you remember… make the scenic drive through the mountains to the historic Hollis Country Store.

Come slow down for a while. Enjoy a homemade pie. Visit with folks. Take in the mountains.

A simpler time and place.

And that’s how we like it.

Front Porch Thoughts From the Hollis Country Store.

We are history nuts. We love learning about the history of the places we visit and trying to imagine what life was like before us. We love visiting historic places, seeing them as they are today, while at the same time wondering about what they once looked like and the people who once walked those same streets.

Maybe nothing saddens us more than discovering that something we’ve read about or seen in an old photograph is simply… gone.

A building that once meant something to someone. A place that may have been the heart of an entire community. A business where generations gathered. A place where people laughed, celebrated, worked, raised families and made memories.

And once it's gone, it can never truly be brought back.

That is a big part of what we’re doing here in Hollis.

What we’re doing is about more than running an old country store.

It’s about carrying forward a place that has meant so much to so many people — and to our family.

The Hollis Country Store is a true living piece of Arkansas history. It is a place where people can walk through the door today and experience something that has been part of this community and this highway for generations.

Every week, we get to watch old memories come flooding back as folks walk through the door and say, “I remember coming here when I was a kid.”

And then we get to watch new memories being made - with families, friends, travelers and folks who have never been here before.

That is what makes all of this so special to us.

We know we can’t save every historic place. We can’t bring back the ones that are gone.

But we can do our part to make sure this one is still here.

For our family.
For the people who remember it.
For the people discovering it for the first time.
And hopefully, for generations who haven’t even been born yet.

We are proud to be the stewards of this little piece of Arkansas history.

And we hope, with all our hearts, that the stories, memories, conversations and friendships made here on the front porch will continue for a very, very long time.

Come see us sometime. Step through the door. Sit a spell. And help us keep history alive.

From our family to yours,

Donnie & Gena Crain, 4th Generation Proprietors

Happy Sunday from Hollis Country Store!
There's nothing like the drive in with Forked Mountain standing watch over the road — some views never get old.
We had a great crew of Jeep folks stop through today, dust and all. Always good to see the trails bring people our way.
And a special moment yesterday afternoon — a sweet lady visited whose family roots run deep in this area, and she recognized someone special in one of our old photos on the wall: her own great-great-grandmother, sitting right out front of our store back in the 1940s! Getting to watch her make that connection, generations later, standing in almost the same spot — that's what makes this place so special.
Thanks for stopping by, and for sharing your family's story with us.
Enjoy every second of your day because you can’t get it back to do over!

Take the scenic drive to Hollis… and step back into a simpler time.

There’s something special about a visit to the Hollis Country Store.

Maybe it’s the drive through the Ouachita Mountains. Maybe it’s an RC Cola and a fried bologna sandwich. That perfect piece of homemade pie, just like your Grandma made. Or maybe it’s the way you can walk through our doors as a stranger and leave feeling like an old friend.

Here, conversations aren’t rushed. They’re about the great outdoors, the changing seasons, favorite places to explore, and memories of the days of yesteryear. And every now and then, a chance meeting turns into a friendship.

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming David and Angie Hendrix from Harrison, who stopped in to see us not once, but twice - on their way to Hot Springs National Park and again on their way back. That’s the kind of visit we love!

So if you’re looking for something a little different, make the scenic drive to Hollis. Slow down. Take in the mountains. Meet some new friends. Share a story or two.

And experience for yourself what we call Real. Authentic. Arkansas.

Some places are more than just places. They become part of the story of a community...

Here at the Hollis Country Store, we’re incredibly proud of the history of our little country store - and we love preserving that history and sharing it with others.

The story began way back in 1930, when Mike Gross and Bill Furr started the store here in Hollis. In 1940, our great-grandparents Dennis & Lillie Crain purchased the store, and different members of the Crain family have operated it since.

Today, we are carrying on that tradition as the 4th generation of our family to be a part of this special place...

The other day, we had the pleasure of visiting with Michael Rhoads, great-grandson of Mike Gross, one of the original founders of the store. We loved hearing his stories, listening to his memories, and learning more about the early days of the store and the family & people who helped shape its history.

Those are the moments we treasure.

Because the Hollis Country Store is so much more than just another place to eat.

- It’s a place filled with history.
- It’s family and community.
- It’s stories and memories.
- It’s generations of people who have walked through these doors.

And it’s a little piece of rural Arkansas that we feel incredibly blessed to help preserve.

We love that people come to Hollis from near and far - not just for a fried bologna sandwich, homemade pie, or our made-from-scratch cathead biscuits and gravy - but to experience something that feels a little different.

Something real.
Something authentic.
Something that connects us to a simpler time.

And every story we hear, every memory that is shared, and every new visitor who walks through our doors becomes another part of the ongoing story of the Hollis Country Store!
