8 different popular K-Cup style coffee makers were tested for bacteria

“Testing the water tank, the spot where you put the k cup, the spout, and the tray, and we sent off all the samples” to a lab

🚨 They tested 20 machines, ALL 20 tested positive for

- E. Coli
- Staphylococcus
- Streptococcus
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- And a whole bunch of stuff that you don't wanna hear about when it comes to a hot cup of coffee

They swabbed K-Cup style machines in people’s homes. Testing the water tank reservoir, pod holder area, spout, and drip tray and sent samples to a lab

Pittsburgh (KDKA): Swabbed 9 machines. One example had 4.6 million colonies of bacteria and mold

Dallas tested around 10 machines and found 11 different bacteria plus mold, including E. coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Chicago had similar result. Bacteria like Staph, Strep, Bacillus cereus, and E. coli in machines

So why does this happen

Single serve machines create a warm, moist environment with coffee residues and standing water. This is ideal for bacteria and mold to grow, Many people rarely or never
deep clean them. The hot brewing water doesn’t fully sterilize everything, particularly biofilms in reservoirs and tubes

Newer studies on coffee makers including in hospitals show microbial growth is common

You have to deep clean your machines. That means descaling with a vinegar solution

💧 Another Article About Coffee Water… Because It’s That Important

Coffee is 98% water

Water pulls the flavor out of coffee

Bad water = bad coffee
Even with expensive beans

🧪 What’s Actually in Water?

Water is not just H₂O

It contains minerals

❌ No chlorine
It creates chemical off-flavors

✅ Yes to minerals
They help extract flavor

Two key things matter

1 Hardness
2 Alkalinity

Too little or too much can cause

Sour coffee
Bitter coffee
Flat coffee

The goal is not pure water, the goal is balanced water

Hardness = Extraction Power

Hardness comes from

Calcium
Magnesium

These minerals grab flavor from coffee

Too little → weak, under-extracted coffee
Too much → heavy or bitter coffee

⚖️ Calcium vs Magnesium

Calcium
More body
More creaminess
More sweetness

Too much → dull and chalky

⚡ Magnesium
More brightness
More fruit
More liveliness

Too much → bitterness and dryness

The ratio changes the taste

More magnesium → bright and citrusy
More calcium → fuller and sweeter

Alkalinity = Acid Controller

Coffee is naturally acidic

Alkalinity controls how much acidity gets softened

Too little → sharp and sour
Too much → flat and muddy

👉 Ideal range is often 40 to 70 ppm

Alkalinity is more important than pH

pH = how acidic the water is right now
Alkalinity = how much acid it can neutralize

GH = calcium + magnesium
This controls extraction strength

KH = alkalinity
This controls acidity balance

TDS = total dissolved minerals
Around 150 ppm is often ideal

pH = current acidity level

Chlorine should always be 0

☕ Filter vs ⚡ Espresso

☕ Filter
Can handle slightly more hardness
Often benefits from stronger extraction

⚡ Espresso
Needs controlled hardness
Protects the machine
Keeps balance in short extraction

For both

Alkalinity usually 40 to 70 ppm
TDS often around 150 ppm
