How To Not Annoy The Judge: Wardrobe Malfunction Edition

This section didn’t make it in the book…but it still deserves a post. 😏

If you’ve shown long enough, you’ve either had a wardrobe malfunction…or your time is coming. ⏳

Something rips, something breaks, or something shifts that absolutely should not be shifting. 😳
And suddenly you’re mid-class, questioning every life decision that led you to that exact moment.

This is where some riders lose it. They start riding like it’s happening. They shrink, they panic, and they focus more on managing the problem than riding the horse.

And now the judge has something to notice. 👀

Here’s the reality: unless you’re revealing something wildly inappropriate, the judge either won’t notice…or won’t care.

What will affect your placing is riding like your class just fell apart.

The riders who handle this best keep showing like nothing happened and like the blue ribbon is still within reach. 🏆
Confidence covers a lot…even when your suit doesn’t. 😉

Practical survival tips:
• Keep a sewing kit, strong tape, and safety pins with you (full disclosure, the sewing kit does me no good, but it sounds responsible) 🧷
• Have a backup pair of jods that can work with multiple suits
• Develop a very healthy lack of shame 😌

And for the record, I am a wardrobe malfunction expert.
I’ve ripped more suits than most people have ever owned. I’ve ripped them at National Championships, in equitation, in the warm-up ring, and on the first pass.

I’ve ripped them when no one noticed.
I’ve ripped them when everyone noticed.
I’ve ripped them when I didn’t notice…but the audience definitely did. 😅
You name it, I’ve done it.

What I’ve learned is simple: the show still goes on.

Ride like you’re winning, even if you can hear fabric tearing with every stride. 🐎

If you keep your presence, your composure, and your plan, there’s a very good chance you still will.
Thankfully, photoshop exists so you can order the victory pass photo. 😏📸

And just like that, another chapter of the Callaway Hills story comes to a close.

We started in 1944 with Betty Weldon and a young mare named Fourth Estate. We followed the horses, the bloodlines, the crosses and the decisions that slowly built a breeding program — until that story led us to Will Shriver.

But what happened next is where the Callaway Hills story becomes something much bigger.

And there may be no better week to continue it.

It’s World’s Championship Horse Show week at the Kentucky State Fair.

More than 80 years after Betty bought that first mare, descendants of the horses and bloodlines we’ve been talking about will once again step onto the green shavings at Freedom Hall.

So while we celebrate the horses competing this week, we’re also going to start following the legacy forward — from Will Shriver to the generations that came after him.

Because at Callaway Hills, history isn’t something that just happened.

You can still see it walking into the ring.
