Hello June!!
Did you know that June is considered National Dairy Month, and June first is also World Milk Day.
Ever wonder how the month of June became associated with the promotion and consumption of dairy products?
World Milk Day was established in 2001 to recognize the value of milk in healthy diets and to support the dairy industry’s role in feeding the global population. June 1 was chosen because many countries were already observing milk-related celebrations around this time. Over the years, the day has grown into a global movement, marked by campaigns, community events, and educational programs.
June Dairy Month, initially called National Milk Month in 1937, was established to address a surplus of milk production, particularly during the warmer summer months. The surplus was a result of spring calving, and the need to promote milk consumption as a way to reduce the excess production, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.
By 1939, June became the official 'dairy month' and is still celebrated today and now includes the promotion of all dairy products.
Milk is one of the most complete natural foods, rich in calcium, protein, vitamins, and minerals. It supports bone health, muscle growth, and overall development, especially in children. Beyond nutrition, This year’s theme shines a spotlight on women who play a critical role in dairy farming worldwide.
From early morning animal care and feeding to milking, hygiene management, fodder preparation, and milk marketing, women are often the backbone of dairy households. Dairy farming has become an important source of financial independence for rural women.
