Was able to get some of the girls onto new pasture today after they figured out how to cross the creek bridge I built for them. They were not fans some of them wouldn’t cross but I’m hoping after a day or two of crossing they figured out the grass really is greener on the other side!

From the apiary during hive inspections this afternoon. We seem to have a decent flow going right now as we are drawing lots of comb in the new hives and our first hives are filling up with honey. All of what they gather for the year will stay in the hives to help the bees make it till spring but hopefully we can start harvesting next year.

We don’t talk much about our other critters outside the goats but watching the chickens out working today decided we would mention them. They play and integral part in pest management here on the farm and that is why we expanded our flock in 2020 and hope to do so again in spring 2021. During hatching season we run 2 flicks. The first is our New Hampshire Reds. The second is our Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. We hope to be offering chicks and hatching eggs from both in spring 2021. Our chickens currently provide many services here on the farm from tick management in the yard and pasture to fertilizer to helping clean up around the feed troughs which reduces flies and helping to reduce the lifecycle of the worm larvae in the goat pastures. They provide eggs for us they also share there eggs with the dogs that help protect the farm.
