Welcome to the world Iris 💜

Born 8.5.26 in the evening! Kelpie is a wonderful, patient and watchful new mother. Auntie Thistle is also being very sweet with her new niece.

She is named after the serene vocalist and masterful songwriter Iris DeMent. The song I covered is Hotter Than Mojave by Iris Dement, from her 1992 album Infamous Angel.

We are so excited about this new arrival and can't wait to see Iris and Ola Belle play together. Iris has beautiful piebald markings, making her our first Royal yak.

Taking the next step to learn how to process the raw yak fiber into yarn, thanks to motivation from Calypso Farm and Ecology Center and inspiration from to see where local expertise and collaborations lead!

Thank you so much to for getting me started with hand carding and generously letting me borrow the carders. I am excited to learn the spinning process!

I have always felt like I have fumbled with crafts that require fine motor skills and saw myself as possibly only ever engaging with the harvesting level of the fiber process. My hands are usually full with feeding, training, and farm upkeep but this year learning a new skill that is both personal, useful, and meditative seems like it just might feel good!

Maybe years from now I'll be learning to knit and looking back at this video of trying to use the drop spindle and laugh, thanks Cary Fremin for teaching me how to use it.

Tibetan Buddhism yaks are sacred and respected beings that are symbols of

🏔️ strength & resilience, for their ability to withstand the challenges of harsh conditions with poise;

🌿 interconnectedness of all things, because of the integration and reliance between yaks, people, and environment in the Himalayas;

🪾impermanence, through cycles of life and death of the yak. Upon death, yak bones are imbued with their sacred transformation and often made into prayer beads (malas) as a peaceful reminder to the wearer to acknowledge change and to strive to conquer ego and attachment.

I'm writing this from a place of immense privilege, to share my life with yaks and learn why they carry so much significance in the culture and environment they are native to. It is privilege that allows me to raise animals that are not native to Alaska in Alaska, and privilege that allows me to live here with them.

In order to take accountability for this privilege, I want to take a moment to share that at our farm we learn and educate, and welcome people from all countries and backgrounds that recognize our interconnectedness and hold respect for all beings.
