Boreal Peonies

Boreal Peonies Boreal Peonies is a farm and research station in the Alaskan Interior that conducts scientific propagation trials and produces peonies in July and August.

Alaskan peonies are available from July through September (a time of year when peonies are generally not available) and are in very high demand worldwide. Thus, the developing peony industry in Alaska is working hard to determine the best nutrient/fertilizer treatments and agricultural practices that will yield the best stems/buds for the cut flower industry. Researchers from Miami University (Ohi

o) and the College of Mount St. Joseph collaborate with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Alaska Peony Growers Association to run experimental trails on peony varieties at the farm in an effort to determine best practices for growing arctic peonies. The peony plants at Boreal Peonies are young, and will not be in full production until July of 2016. We will post updates on the experimental trial results and provide information on the development of each peony variety.

Fourteen years ago we drove to Fairbanks to teach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for the summer. Tonight we are having dinner at the same restaurant, Pikes, where we had our first meal, as we say goodbye to Alaska. It’s been a wonderful 14 years of teaching and building a very successful peony farm. But, now it is time to move on to the next phase of our lives. Thank you Alaska for giving us the greatest adventure of our lives! ❤️

Probably everyone’s favorite peony on the farm is Garden Treasure. Just spectacular!

The Permafrost Grown project at the University of Alaska Fairbanks relies on collaboration with local farmers (inc. Boreal Peonies), as they know the unique challenges associated with farming on permafrost. How could you help address the issue of food security?
