Here are some key takeaways on the products suggested by the Texas Animal Health Commission in regard to The New World Screwworm. The recording of the meeting can be found in the county’s post.
Dectomax is currently the recommended product for prevention and treatment. Injection offers the quickest treatment response, while both injectable and pour on can be used for prevention.
Ivermectin is considered a good preventative but is not viewed as an effective treatment for an active infestation.
Permethrin based screwworm wound sprays such as Prozap, Aspen, and Catron IV are effective treatment options.
F10 Antiseptic Wound Spray with Insecticide provides dual action treatment by treating the wound while also killing the larvae. The spray is currently available and the ointment will be available in about three weeks.
Exzolt can be used as both a preventative and a treatment but you must get it through your veterinarian.
Negasunt Powder is an approved treatment. However it is currently unavailable to the public.
We currently have all the OTC products that have been recommended in-stock. The F10 spray will arrive on 6/19 and we are working on getting the ointment here as well.
As always, inspect your animals for wounds and consult with your Veterinarian and State Officials for guidance if you suspect an active case.
