A look inside the sunny yellow kitchen at English Hills. It may just be the happiest little kitchen I've ever stepped into.

We redesigned this space from top to bottom, drawing inspiration from the timeless cottage kitchens of the English countryside. While butter yellow has become increasingly popular in recent years, we found ourselves drawn to something a little richer—a deep yellow ochre that feels both warm and grounded.

The color is Madeleine by The Little Greene Paint Company, and it has quickly become my favorite paint color. It shifts beautifully throughout the day, feeling soft and inviting in the morning light and rich and cozy as evening settles in.

Paired with natural linens, gingham accents, unlacquered brass, and fresh flowers, the kitchen has become the heart of the cottage—a place for gathering, creating, and slowing down.

One of my favorite transformations to date. 🤍

May was a month we’ll never forget at English Hills Farm.

Between planting flowers, tending the lavender field, making progress on barn restoration projects, and unveiling our new brand, it feels like we’re stepping into a new chapter of this farm’s story.

This month also brought the exciting news that English Hills Farm will be featured by KCCI as part of their America’s 250th celebration series, highlighting places and stories that make Iowa special. It’s an incredible honor to share this little corner of Marion County with a wider audience.

Here’s a look back at May on the farm—the work, the beauty, and the moments that remind us why we started this journey.

Thank you for following along. We can’t wait to share what’s next. 🤍

Wallpapering – one of those rewarding things that can be intimidating until you get the hang of it.

We found the most beautiful wildflower wallpaper by for our cottage attic. It creates such a fun playful atmosphere.

We took a pause from construction work in December to spend time with family and friends and to celebrate our son’s first birthday on New Year’s Eve. We weren’t sure if the farmhouse would be ready to host. Some things we had to look past, as they are far from complete. But we had the best time seeing this farm bring people together.

A few of my favorite scenes from our little flower cottage renovation this month. Projects fueld by Joanna Gaine’s french silk pie.

It’s time! Today this 100 year old barn gets a new life. Just days before a predicted snowfall, we anxiously await as the barn takes shape, nail by nail. The crew worked hard today to remove the old shakes, and they are working fast! They anticipate they will be finished by Wednesday. What I’m looking forward to the most — that beautiful red paint in the snow. We wouldn’t be here without the barn grant from The Iowa Barn Foundation. We can’t thank them enough. More updates coming soon!

This farmhouse might be in Pleasantville, but everything about it’s in color 🎨

7 months of progress and the home within the house is starting to shine through.

We’re so excited to announce, we’ve been chosen by the Iowa Barn Foundation as a grant recipient. Grant money will be used to repair the barn completely and bring it back to its former glory.

Soon you’ll be able to add English Hills as a stop on your annual statewide barn tour road trip. And how fun, the June barn tour coincides with lavender season!

For us, the barn represents the heart of our farm, and it will become the place where lavender is hung to dry, where the distiller will live, and where we will make bouquets for markets.

We are so grateful and cant wait to share progress. We are scheduled to begin restoration in only 3 weeks!!! We will have a full crew working on it and it will be done by Thanksgiving, with weather permitting. Who knows, maybe we will even have Thanksgiving dinner in that hayloft.

We renovated a 1930 Iowa farmhouse and turned it into an English cottage on a lavender farm. Now, we’re selling everything in the city to start a new life, on the flower farm, and this little cottage will become our home. 🤍
