Hickory Grove Farm

Hickory Grove Farm Family owned and farmed since the 1780's. The local food movement is very strong. For us it's a bit deeper than the average farmer.

Today there has been a rebirth of the idea of knowing where your food comes from and having other factors drive food choices instead of simply price. Most people who get into farming talk about how they feel connected to the land and wanting to get back to a more traditional way of life. When we talk about being connected to the land and being good stewards of the land it means a lot more to us. O

ur family began farming our current farm in the 1786. Through the centuries we have grown about everything on the farm. Recently, for us 50 years or so, we were a large dairy. In the 1970's the farm transitioned away from that and was mainly growing hay and to***co. In the early 2000's we bought into the idea of big corn and soybeans. While this was profitable it never felt right. As we were growing all of these acres of soybean or corn every year we were starting to see that it was changing the land. With over two centuries of farming the same land we felt like in a little over ten years we were running the farm into the ground. The farm was making as much money if not more as it always had but we were starting to see changes that we didn't like. The land was becoming barren and it was taking more inputs to achieve the same yields. The first few years the soils fertility was enough to grow the corn or soybeans with very little inputs. This began to change and were adding more and more chemical fertilizers and having to spray more and more pesticides for weeds that were never on the farm when we were growing up. There was no longer a diversity of wildlife and fauna like there used to be when we were children. One telling change was the pollinators on the farm. Growing up summer days could be spent outside catching monarch and swallow tail butterflies. At one point you were lucky to see a handful of these butterflies the entire summer. In 2014 we decided to make a change. We started down the long road to growing products for people to eat instead of for big corn and big soybean. Growing up there was always a large garden behind the house, usually about an acre. It was always a treat to go out into the garden when visiting our grandparents and pick out what we were going to eat that day. In the winter it meant going to the basement in the cannery and pick out the vegetables for dinner. Nothing was better than homemade preserverves on one of my grandmothers yeast rolls for desert. You knew exactly where your food was coming from and it always tasted better, and was more satisfying than the store bought version. As we got older we were even allowed to have our own little spot in the garden and plant what we wanted planting the seeds of our current venture. Now instead of only growing one type of plant we are growing hundreds. We have also added animals back onto the farm. While we have embraced technology in how we grow and manage the land we have made a decision to use many older breads of animals and plants. While they do not grow as fast the modern equivalents they taste far better.

Everyone knows what a bourbon tasting is around here but have you heard of a melon tasting? We are planting over 14 different varieties of melons this year — and will be hosting melon tastings right here on the farm. 🍈

Walk the fields. See where your food grows. Then taste your way through the full lineup and find your favorite. Unique, hard to find varieties you won’t see at the grocery store or probably any other stand at the market.

We’re not just growing cantaloupe and calling it a day. Fourteen varieties, many heirlooms, all different. It’s going to be one of those summer days you don’t forget.

CSA members get first choice on tickets before we open it up to everyone else. One more reason to join.

More details coming soon — varieties, dates, all of it. Stay tuned!

We asked our CSA members why they chose the Market-Style CSA. Here's what they said. 👆

"Going to the farmers market is one of my favorite things to do each week but I still want to have my own CSA. This is the best of both worlds!" — Lisa

"I've been doing a box style the past few years but the social media pictures of what they were bringing to market looked better than what was in my box. So I wanted to switch to one where I could shop." — Brian

"I never remember what is in season or know what I'm cooking the next week. I just show up to market and buy what looks good and it takes all the stress of customizing a box each week." — Emily

Three members. Three different reasons. Same answer — a CSA where you actually get to choose.

No box. No guessing. No food going to waste. Just your $800 Market Card, over 24 different crops throughout the season, and the freedom to shop our stand whenever and however you want.

Brassica season is upon us — and our fields are full of them.
You may know them as cole crops but you definitely know them from your dinner plate. Either way, this ancient plant family is some of the most nutritious food you can eat, and we grow just about all of them right here on the farm.

✅ Cabbage, red & green — gut-friendly, rich in vitamin C & K
✅ Broccoli — loaded with antioxidants & anti-inflammatory compounds
✅ Cauliflower — versatile, high in fiber & choline
✅ Kale, red, green & dinosaur — one of the most nutrient-dense greens on the planet
✅ Collards — a Southern staple packed with calcium & vitamins A, C & K
✅ Kohlrabi — crisp, sweet, high in potassium & vitamin B6
✅ Brussels Sprouts — tiny but mighty, great for detox support & gut health
✅ Turnips — underrated root veggie rich in fiber & folate
✅ Radishes — peppery, crunchy & great for liver support
✅ Bok Choy / Pac Choi — tender, mild & loaded with vitamins A & C

Many of these are in the ground now, and some are very close to making their market debut. These will be showing up at the market stands throughout the season and are another thing our Market Style CSA members look forward too.

While most gardens around here are still waiting on warmer weather, we’re already getting after it inside our high tunnels.
Today we transplanted cucumbers into them.

These structures let us push the season — no artificial heat, just a protected environment that traps warmth from the sun and keeps the wind and frost off the plants. All of these plants are grown in the dirt just like the ones in the fields. The tunnels are how we get your vegetables to market weeks before outdoor crops are even close.

We’re not trying to rush anything. We’re just giving these plants a head start so when you show up at the stand, the good stuff is already there waiting for you.

Cucumbers in the ground today, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers have been in them for weeks— all of it getting going earlier than if we didn’t have that extra protection! 🍅🫑

By the time outdoor growing catches up, our customers and CSA members have already been eating. More info about the tunnels throughout the season. Stay tuned. 🌱
