Have you ever grown popcorn? It's not like we can't just go to the store and buy popcorn. Even organic. It's cheap and easily available. So why do we do it?

So my kids can appreciate something so simple as a bowl of popcorn. So they can think about afternoons shucking corn on the porch. Because we believe we can produce our own food. We believe in the slow food movement, the local food movement, and supporting small farms. We believe families have been doing this for ages and we don't want to loose that.

Getting ready to nixtamalize our first batch of corn tonight. This will turn into beautiful blue masa we will use to make corn tortillas.

After canning 230 pounds of tomatoes so far for sauce, we decided it was time to make some noodles to go along with it...

3 hours and 40 minutes

That's how long it took to pull out old stuff from 12 beds, cover the beds with cardboard (we usually use newspaper but with all the rain this year, the weeds have been crazy so we're upping our game), cover the beds with mulch, and plant 200 cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, butternut, spaghetti, acorn and rampicante squashes.

To keep myself from having to do more than 200 squats today, I made planting holes by taking this simple wooden stake, poking it through the cardboard, twisting it 360 degrees and I had a perfect size hole.

It takes 250 pounds of tomatoes to make enough spaghetti sauce to last us a year. Another 120 pounds to make all of our ketchup and 60 pounds to make BBQ sauce. People wonder why we plant over 100 tomato plants every year....that's why, lol.

We processed 70 pounds yesterday....only 360 more to go : )
