We the People of the South Shore voted for a review of Ppapa’s Pizza Bar and that’s exactly what they shall receive. As always this review is taste tested, unbiased, unpaid, and the honest truth so help me God.

Ordered extra crispy:
- Pepperoni pizza
- The Holy Ghost (chorizo, peppers and onions)
- Rio Rancho (chicken, bacon, ranch)

Dough: Solid for a rookie. Reminded me a lot of Johnny Kono’s dough. I would not be shocked if it’s purchased and not made in house. The pizza bums on these 3 were nothing to write home about.

Sauce: Quality sauce and a nice light amount. Ask for extra if you’re part of the Sauce is Boss Crew.

Cheese: Good amount of cheese and nice flavor. Pretty sure it’s white cheddar, maaaybe a lil mozz mixed in.

Edges: Nothing crazy like Buddy’s or Cod, but they delivered a light lacing without even asking.

Toppings: If you’re looking at the pics you’re wondering, where’s the Rio Rancho…we had a delightful misfire and instead I received a Ricotta Roni Stinger (ricotta, pepperoni and hot honey). Typically, I’m not a huge fan of ricotta on bar pizza, but these guys cooked it on the pizza and it came out fantastic. The hot honey is such a big time upgrade.

The Holy Ghost was pretty floppy and hard to handle, but the topping were top notch. The peppers and onions were flavorful and juicy (leading to the flop show). The chorizo added a little kick. Big fan of what this pizza had going on.

The pepperoni pizza was just okay. There was nothing wrong with it taste wise, just not a heavyweight contender as a standalone pepperoni pizza.

Venue: Loved the vibe at this place. Reminded me of a mini Trading Post Lounge right on Main Street in Plymouth.

Overall: I’m a fan and satisfied customer. Not going to score them out just yet, but they’re on the right path.

Sullivan’s Castle Island at Hanover Crossing

I went to Sullivan’s a few months ago and made some rookie ordering mistakes. I didn’t notice the hot chicken came with coleslaw and I ordered the roni, hot honey, and ricotta with ricotta even though I don’t particularly care for ricotta.

I wanted to give them another go. As always this review is taste tested, unbiased, unpaid, and the honest truth so help me God.

- Cheese Pizza (Sullivan's 5 cheese blend)
- Pepperoni Ricotta Hot Honey (ordered no ricotta for round 2)
- Southern Hot Chicken (ordered no coleslaw round 2)

Let me start off by saying that Sullivan’s Castle Island is a Massachusetts institution. If there is a Massachusetts restaurant HOF, they have my vote first ballot. I’ve been a Sullivan’s Castle Island patron since before I have memories and I will be a Sullivan’s patron until the day I die.

Dough: I don’t know if they ran out of dough and popped into Market Basket or Trader Joe’s, but this was a total whiff. It’s regular pizza dough and chewy at that. They didn’t do their homework.

Cheese: The Plain Cheese pizza was very revealing. I don’t know the specifics of their 5 cheese blend, but the closest comparison I can draw is Pino’s Pizza (NBP) in Cleveland Circle. It’s unlike anything across the SSBP landscape.

Edges: Calling this a “famous laced edge crust” on the menu is offensive to the good citizens of the South Shore.

Cook: I went no special instructions and it was ok. Too many other wrongs with this pizza to p**s and moan about the cook.

Toppings: Despite ordering “no ricotta” and “no coleslaw”, I got both. Listen, this is easily fixable in person, but online instructions were not followed. Trust me, it didn’t affect the scores too much.

The hot honey was tasty. The pepperoni was solid. The chicken was okay, but there was nothing hot about this pizza.

Overall: This ain’t it. It was more than edible and a tasty snack, but knock it off calling this SSBP.

The Edge - Plymouth, MA ( warning)

I found in Sandwich, MA back in June 2021. They opened a location in Plymouth Center a couple of months ago and I let them get their sea legs under them. As always, this review is taste tested, unbiased, unpaid, and God’s honest truth.

⁃ Dub Pep (A 2x layer of roni. One layer hugs the dough and the thick cut roni cups top the pizza.)
⁃ The Luau (Seasoned Pork, pineapple, maui onion, Fresh jalapeno, Finished With Sriracha Teriyaki sauce black sesame seeds and Nori crumbles.)
⁃ Cheesy Garlic Butter Dipsticks

Dough - It’s basically a crispy pan fried focaccia bread. Even with pretty heavy toppings it stayed light, airy, and crispy. They have mastered their craft and describe it as “pizza cake”.

Sauce - Beautifully basic San Marzano tomato sauce. Not too sweet, not overloaded with spices, and it’s not acidic/doesn’t give you heartburn.

Toppings - The Dub Pep is first ballot pepperoni pizza HOF. Doubling down with a base layer of “regular” roni and a top layer of thick cut cupping roni is a level of class and integrity you don’t see often. I can’t say much more about this pizza without crossing the line into pizza p*rnography.

The Luau shocked me with how well the dough held up. Everything about this was top notch. Nice shredded/chunks of pork. The teriyaki sauce was great. I know pineapple can be controversial, but as I was told “ladies love it”.

The cheesy garlic butter dipsticks stole the show. J’s Flying Pizza puts out a great garlic cheese breadstick and they aren’t on this level. The cheesy caramelized edges are beyond glorious. If there’s a better one on the SS or anywhere in America, I need to know.

Edges - Perfectly, and I mean perfectly caramelized cheese edges. The way these edges artistically sprout up off the pizza is cover model worthy for Pizza Pl***oy.

Cook - No special instructions, just 3 PERFECTLY cooked pizzas.

Overall - This is the best Detroit style pizza in Massachusetts. These pizzas put beaming smiles on Patriots fans faces yesterday (true story). Usually I am vs Everybody, but this spot deserves some attention.

Dub Pep - 9.5
The Luau - 8.9
Dipsticks - 9.9

I’ve been to Bardo’s before but they knew I was there, so I don’t count it as an official review. I’m pretty sure this was undercover. I ordered:

- Sweet Dreams – Pepperoni, ricotta cheese, house made hot habanero honey (ordered no ricotta)

Apologies for the subpar pics, I don’t go full paparazzi and let my phone make love to the pizza in the middle of the restaurant…plus it was pretty bright outside.

Dough - I was a big fan of the dough. The pizza got served pretty quickly and was piping hot. When it immediately hit the table it was admittedly a fork and knife pizza. Spread those slices apart and give it a couple minutes…and the pizza bottoms firmed up nicely.

I thought their dough was most similar to Town Spa, only it was more buttery and and slightly crumbly. I’ll leave it at this, I’d love to have a Bardo’s pizza off a deck oven.

Cheese - An All-American amount of cheese on this pizza. No need to order extra. Maybe a bit of mozz but nice white cheddar predominantly featured.

Edges - No need to ask, their pizzas come out with classy laced edges.

Cook - This was ordered “as is” and it came out pretty much perfect. Go to some OG spots, forget to say extra crispy and you may be disappointed…not at Bardo’s!

Toppings - Nothing but respect for places that go full coverage with their pepperoni placement.

The hot honey was appropriately hot. It didn’t scorch your tongue or leave a burning sensation. If you want some red ass the next morning, pound this thing with crushed red pepper.

I don’t like ricotta so I said “no ricotta, please”. If you do like ricotta, you don’t need to say what I said.

Overall - While I am not a fan of crossing the Neponset River for anything but Celtics games, I AM a fan of Bardo’s Pizza!

Official Score - 8.9
