Spring is here in upstate New York, and that lush green grass is calling... but hold up, horse owners! 🌱🐴 Don't let the beauty fool you—turning your horses out too quickly on fresh spring pasture can lead to serious trouble like laminitis (founder), colic, or rapid weight gain.

That tender new growth is loaded with sugars and fructans, especially after cool nights and sunny days, which can wreak havoc on their gut and hooves. Ponies, easy keepers, overweight horses, or those with a history of laminitis/EMS are at highest risk—even healthy ones can get hit if they gorge after a winter of hay.
Quick safety tips to enjoy turnout without the drama:

*Wait until grass is 6-8 inches tall before starting.

*Start slow: 15-30 minutes on day 1, increase gradually over 1-2 weeks.

*Feed hay first to curb gorging.

*Turn out early morning or evening when sugars are lower.

*Use grazing muzzles for at-risk horses (they still get to graze but slower!).

*Monitor for heat/pain in hooves—call your vet ASAP if anything seems off.

Prevention beats treatment every time. Laminitis is painful and can be career- or life-ending. Who's being extra careful with spring turnout this year? Share your tips below! 💚

We are excited to announce the arrival of new members to our farm, which will certainly bring excitement to the breeding season. Four registered Percheron mares from Northern Lights Percherons in Manitoba, Canada, have joined our farm. And yes, I drove to Manitoba alone during winter to bring these ladies home. LOL

Moreover, we are anticipating the birth of a Percheron foal in the spring, and two of these broodmares are available for purchase. The two available mares are open but may be sold with a breeding to our Friesian/Percheron stallion Iron Valen.
