After ~150 days of hay, this week we are back to grazing at Farmcraft. The cows and the people and the land are happy to be back to grazing, the herd moving across the landscape and eating fresh living forage.

The spring let-out! Hens are back on the grass after a cozy winter in the hoop house. All the girls are laying and we have lots of eggs - fresh, organic fed, and pastured - available in the farm store or from the website.
In early May, when the grass is ready and temperatures are consistently above freezing, the hens will move away from the hoop house until next winter. All summer they will be rotated around the farm with their mobile coops, following the cattle herd in their daily moves.

Baby chicks! These are meat birds - if you want to see cute chicks, come soon! Seriously, in just a day or two they’ll look totally different. In 3 weeks they’ll be big enough to be on pasture 24/7.

10 minutes old and onto her feet! Another beautiful heifer calf born into the herd, on the pasture and under the sun yesterday afternoon. Mama is doing a lovely job cleaning her off in this video. Cow tongues are strong and ROUGH. Just a few licks on your bare skin will leave it feeling raw. Calves are really brought to life, their systems woken up in their new existance outside the womb, by this licking, which goes nonstop for hours and off-and-on into the next couple days.

A gaggle of piglets. Born in the fresh air and on clean bedding. Spring is tough weather - newborn piglets don't fare well and sows don't mother well in windy freezing rain, so we provide an airy open ended hoop house for the sows to farrow in and the piglets to play in. Pigs are social animals, so we provide group accomodations. We like the sows to farrow in eachother's company and for the piglets to grow up, right from the start, with their half-brothers and sisters.

First Farmcraft piglets of the year! Goldie gave us 5 piglets. We hope for 8-12 piglets from a mature mama. We are still of course quite grateful for 5 new beautiful healthy babies on the farm. They leave the hoop house on warm days and snuggle in the bedding and next to mama on cold days. Mama (Goldie) is protective. She had enough and shooed me away at the end of the video. We have 4 more sows that will farrow in the next 2 weeks or so.

First calf of the year, born the first day of spring! A beautiful little heifer, a blessing to receive to keep building our herd. Mama was a heifer (1st time mama) and she did great, thankfully waiting out the snow storm to bring her calf into the world and then figuring out nursing with ease.
