From Thayer Street to Camelot Drive, with a lot of miles and years in between, the Dogmatics are coming to IndieFerm on Saturday September 20th.
Back in 1985 or 86, a couple of friends and I went to the Rat in Boston to see a band we had heard was really good. We had also heard their tunes on WBCN a few times. And, they were great as we expected. The were the perfect blend of punk, rockabilly, and just straight ahead rock and roll energy.
At the end of their last song, they invited everyone to join them for an after hours party at their loft on Thayer Street. At the time, the area was a sketchy sh*thole, now it has been "revitalized" as the Ink Block.
Did they really just invite club full of drunken rock and roll people that they don't even know to their home? Us included? Who does that?
Of course, we went. It was 40 years ago and I might have had a few beers so the details are a little foggy now, but we had a great time partying with the Dogmatics and a whole lot of other people until the early hours of the morning. They even gave us beers. As it turns out, this was not an unusual thing, the Dogmatics had a lot of parties at that place, but I only went the one time.
We made it back home to the 'burbs and nursed a hangover for a few hours, but I never forgot the generosity and spirit of the Dogmatics that night even though I didn't see them again for decades. I was talking about Boston music with Tim Downie in the IndieFerm taproom early this year and the Dogmatics came up in the conversation. He says, I know them, I used to be their road manager. "Really? Could you get me in touch with them, I would like to see if they would play at IndieFerm?"
Long story short (kinda long actually), this Saturday is the day that it is gonna happen. After 40 years, I get to repay their generosity and throw a party featuring them at IndieFerm. It is an honor.
And they wanted to bring some friends with them, so now it is a 4-band-all-day-rock-and-roll spectacle. The music starts at 2:30 and will wrap up sometime around 7PM.
And, we will be featuring on tap, while it lasts, the Dogmatics Rocky Nook Kolsch. You see, the Dogs don't live in that loft anymore. They live in Kingston, Rocky Nook to be precise. It is an easy-drinking light (but not lite) beer in the German Kolsch style. We will have cans available to go also. That is the label below with a then and now montage of the band. 40 years is a long time, isn't it.
