Do you let them??
Usually we don’t put our goats on open pasture when it’s wet or raining.
- For one they don’t love rain. Some over the years don’t pay any mind but most run for cover..
- Parasites: Warm, wet grass creates the perfect environment for parasites which like to multiply and climb up the grass. (We like to wait until the sun comes out / grass to dry as the parasites will return back to the ground.
-Goats specifically do not have a highly water resistant coats and are more sensitive especially if shaven for summer.
- We have very good drainage; but any muddy,water logged areas can also cause issues with foot rot, scald ect.
With our smaller herd and since I have the capacity to bring our does up nightly. We do bring them to the barn and we put them out to pasture daily weather permitting.
In each pasture they do have shelter if weather goes sideways.. we also provide hay/ mineral access if needed.
Our bucks shelter is in a bigger pasture space almost 2 acres but we can also limit their access and they have access to minerals and hay.
