On our first Business Insider feature last year, I got to talk about the ups and downs of moving off the grid.

Building rich, healthy soil takes time (or a big investment in finished compost) so many of our beds are still a work in progress.🌱🪱 Over the years, we've gotten a lot of questions about how we grow in areas with poor soil.

Thankfully, there are several crops that tolerate less than ideal conditions. Here are eight of my favorites for when your soil just sucks👇

Prices are through the roof, inflation is continuing to rise, and credit card debt is at an all-time high. Social media is now full of folks swearing off consumerism for a "no-buy" or "low-buy" year.

While we won't be taking a no-buy year (not saying it's a bad idea), we took some time to reflect on the common items we've already learned to live without.

It gave us time to observe which of our crops handled hot, dry weather the best and research other potential options for a homestead in a changing climate.
