Today felt like a perfect day to talk about the bees.

They’ve been busy all summer, working the clover, wildflowers, and everything else they can find. Even without apples this year, the hives haven’t slowed down one bit. It’s amazing how they adjust, adapt, and keep going, they’re the hardest workers on the farm.

Fun bee fact: A single honeybee will only make about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her entire lifetime. It takes thousands of bees, all working together, to fill even one jar. Every drop is the result of teamwork, timing, and the rhythm of the hive.

We’ll be harvesting honey soon, and it’s always one of our favorite parts of the year. The smell of warm wax, the hum of the hives, the first taste of fresh honey, it never gets old.

We’ll share more as we get closer, but for now, the bees are doing what they do best: gathering, building, and turning summer into something sweet.

Happy Friday, friends, it’s been a minute since we’ve talked about our honey suckers, and they deserve a little spotlight.

Summer has kept us busy in all the best ways. Between making products, tending to the bees, and keeping everything stocked for markets and online orders, the days have been full. Quiet online, maybe, but definitely not quiet in real life.

And through all of it, our honey suckers have been one of those simple joys we keep coming back to. They’re nostalgic, handmade, and just plain fun.

Hi friends, it’s been a little while since we’ve posted, but we’re still here and enjoying the rhythm of summer on the farm.

Even though we don’t have apples this year (those late frosts were no joke), the trees still need care, water, pruning, and attention. Anyone who grows fruit knows the orchard doesn’t stop just because the harvest does. We’ve been spending our mornings checking irrigation, tending the trees, and keeping everything healthy so they’re ready to bounce back strong next season.

Between that and the bees, summer has been full, in the best way. The hives are busy, the garden is producing, and we’ve been using the quieter weeks to restock all of our handmade products.

So yes, we’re still here, and everything is fully stocked.

Well… today didn’t go the way we planned. We weren’t able to make it to the Idaho Falls Farmers Market thanks to some unexpected issues, but we’re not the type to sit around and cry when things go sideways. We just shift gears and get something useful done.

So I took the time to finally dehydrate last year’s Crown Prince squash and turn it into a fine golden powder. It actually turned out really nice, sweet, smooth, and super versatile.

Here’s everything this powder is good for:
• Thickening soups, stews, chili, and ramen
• Adding flavor and color to homemade bread, rolls, muffins, pancakes, waffles
• Mixing into pasta or gnocchi dough
• Smoothies, fall‑spice drinks, chai, even hot cocoa
• Instant squash purée (just add water)
• Quick creamy soup bases
• Alfredo, cheese sauce, tomato sauce, curry sauce
• Backpacking meals and pantry mixes
• Baby food
• Seasoning blends (curry, chili, BBQ rubs)
• Gravies, casseroles, meatloaf, scrambled eggs

Today’s cozy drink:
Squash Spice Latte
1 tsp squash powder
½ tsp cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg + ginger
1 tsp sugar or honey
Stir into hot milk or coffee. Warm, creamy, and tastes like fall.

Even when plans fall apart, there’s always something productive to do around here. Today turned into a pretty solid kitchen win.

Why Milkweed Matters More Than We Think

If you’ve followed us for a while, you’ve seen us talk about milkweed before, it’s one of the most important plants in our orchard ecosystem. Over the last few years, we’ve slowly been bringing milkweed back to our area, one patch at a time. It’s part of our commitment to keeping things natural, sustainable, and supportive of the wildlife that makes our orchard thrive.

Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed completely, it’s the only place they can lay their eggs, and the only food their caterpillars can eat. Bees rely on it too, especially in mid‑summer when nectar sources start to thin out. When we plant milkweed, we’re not just adding a flower… we’re rebuilding habitat.

I used macro photography for this shot, a super close‑up that reveals the tiny details we usually walk right past. Moments like this remind me how much life is happening in the quiet corners of the orchard.

If you want to help monarchs and bees:
• Plant milkweed native to your area
• Leave a few “wild” patches in your yard
• Avoid pesticides during bloom season
