🌲✨ FUN FACT FRIDAY: The Secret Life of Pine Cones! ✨🌲
Did you know that those humble pine cones scattered around the farm are actually prehistoric weather wizards? Before you come out to the farm for our upcoming craft night, check out these 5 amazing facts about nature's perfect little packages:
🧙♂️ 1. They act as weather wizards: Pine cone scales open and close based on humidity! They close tightly in damp or cold weather to keep their seeds dry and protected, then open right back up in dry, warm weather to let the wind carry them away.
👩 2. Only female cones have seeds: The large, woody cones you love to collect and craft with are actually the girls! Male cones are much smaller, soft, and short-lived—their only job is to spread pollen.
🔥 3. Some need fire to open: Talk about tough! Certain species, like the Jack pine and lodgepole pine, are sealed tightly with tough resin. They require the intense heat of a wildfire to melt the resin and release their seeds.
🦕 4. They are ancient history: Conifers date back more than 300 million years. That means they existed long before flowering plants and were a regular snack during the age of dinosaurs!
⏳ 5. They can live on trees for years: Depending on the species, a single pine cone can hang out attached to a tree branch for 10 years or more before finally dropping to the ground.
