Chicken update — July 6, 2026 🐥🐓

Our Sapphire Gem chickens are about 7 weeks old now, and they are definitely outgrowing the brooder. They’re getting bigger, eating more, feathering out, and showing us they’re ready for the next stage.

We have a coop on the way, and we’ll also be building and setting up their outdoor space so they can move into their new home. They’re ready to go outside, stretch their legs, and start enjoying life in the coop.

For anyone thinking about starting with small chickens at home, it really can be done. You can start them off in a simple brooder bin for a little bit of money, as long as you make sure they have food, clean water, warmth when they’re little, and regular care. That’s how we started ours.

We’ve been able to raise five chickens right in our spare bedroom until they became big enough and ready to go outside. Lord willing, they’ll be giving us eggs one day soon, and we’re waiting on the day we get that first egg! 🥚🐓

The next update will probably be when they’re officially moved into their new coop and settled into their new home. 🐓🏡

🐔 Sapphire Gem Chicken Update — June 23, 2026 🐔

Our Sapphire Gem chickens are getting bigger and stronger every day! As of today, they’re estimated to be about 5½ to 6 weeks old, and their appetite is definitely growing right along with them. 😄

They’re eating more, scratching more, moving around more, and starting to look less like tiny chicks and more like young chickens. Their feathers are coming in nicely, and their little personalities are starting to show.

It’s been a blessing watching them grow from small chicks into a healthy backyard flock. We’re excited to keep watching their progress as they get closer to becoming egg layers later on. 🥚💙

Latin American Garden-Medicinal Plants

In this video, we take a walk through a beautiful volunteer garden that focuses on Latin American medicinal and culinary plants. This garden shows how much we can learn from plants — not just for food, but also for culture, traditional healing, history, and community.

The garden includes many plants native to Latin America, including yerba santa, Mexican milkweed, Mexican beautyberry, hibiscus, night-blooming jasmine, lemon verbena, pineapple sage, Mexican tarragon, Mexican evening primrose, willow bark, and the cinchona tree.

Many of these plants have been used traditionally as teas, oils, skin treatments, sweat bath preparations, and natural remedies. Some were used for stomach problems, coughs, sore throats, insomnia, anxiety, skin conditions, fevers, and rheumatism. Others carry spiritual meaning or help support pollinators like monarch butterflies.

This video is a reminder that plants are more than decoration. They are food, medicine, culture, and wisdom passed down through generations. Many modern medicines were originally connected to plants, and traditional plant knowledge is still important today.

🌱 Sweet Potato Slips Coming Along! 🍠

I wanted to share a video of my sweet potato slips as they grow. There’s something special about watching food start from something simple and turn into a plant that can feed a family. This is what I love about growing your own food — it teaches patience, stewardship, and the value of working with the soil.

Sweet potatoes are not only good to grow, they’re good for the body too. They’re packed with fiber, complex carbohydrates, potassium, vitamin C, and beta-carotene, which the body can turn into vitamin A. They can support digestion, provide steady energy, and make a great healthy food for the whole family.

These slips are just the beginning. With time, care, and good soil, they can turn into a strong harvest. Back to the land, back to growing, and back to feeding ourselves the natural way.

**JADAM Korean Natural Farming Method – Part 2 🌱**

This is **Part 2** of the original JADAM video. In this video, it’s summertime, and you can really see the plants growing, the garden coming alive, and the results of using the **JADAM Korean Natural Farming method**.

**JADAM** stands for **Jayonul Damun Saramdul**, which means **“people who resemble nature.”** It is a Korean natural/organic farming method developed by **Youngsang Cho**, founder of JADAM Organic Farming. The method focuses on **ultra-low-cost farming**, helping everyday growers and farmers make their own natural inputs instead of relying only on expensive store-bought fertilizers and pesticides.

JADAM is commonly made up of natural farming inputs such as **JADAM Microorganism Solution (JMS)**, **JADAM Liquid Fertilizer (JLF)**, **JADAM Wetting Agent (JWA)**, and other homemade soil and plant inputs. These can include ingredients like **leaf mold soil, potatoes, sea salt, water, plant materials, and other simple natural materials**, depending on what is being made.

Chicken Update — June 2, 2026 🐥💙

The Sapphire Gem chicks are doing good and staying warm under the heat lamp. They’re still in their brooder stage, so keeping them warm, dry, and comfortable is important while they grow.

Sapphire Gems are known for being beautiful blue-gray chickens and great egg layers once they mature. They’re a good backyard breed because they’re usually hardy, active, and easy to raise.

Sapphire Gems are known for being friendly, hardy birds and are considered some of the best egg layers for a backyard flock. They can produce around 280–300 large brown eggs per year under good conditions, making them a great choice for anyone interested in fresh eggs.

I got these chicks from Tractor Supply, and I'll be posting regular updates as they grow, develop their feathers, and eventually start laying eggs. It'll be fun to see how they do and share the journey along the way.

🐔 New Addition: Sapphire Gem Chickens! 🥚

I picked up some Sapphire Gem chickens from Tractor Supply, and I’m excited to have them!

Sapphire Gems are known for being great egg layers, producing beautiful large brown eggs and laying often when they are healthy and well cared for. They are also known for their pretty blue-gray coloring, friendly nature, and hardiness.

I’ll be doing updates on the chickens as they grow, so stay tuned for their progress!

Looking forward to watching these little chicks grow and seeing them start laying fresh eggs one day!
