Another Montgomery County link to culinary history: In 1841, Catherine Beecher wrote "A Treatise on Domestic Economy for the Use of Young Ladies at Home," part of the move toward making housework and cooking part of a scientific and economic system. Her sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, inspired by Josiah Henson's account of being enslaved on a Montgomery County plantation.

We were excited to see that the new book "A Culinary History of Montgomery County, Maryland," includes recollections from Sugarland residents! Its authors, Ellen Letourneau and Claudia Kousoulas, also interviewed Gwen Reese of Sugarland for their previous book, Bread & Beauty, in 2018.

Covering everything from colonial farming to the Marriott "hot shoppes" of the 1940s, this informative new book can be found in Poolesville at Locals or the Calleva Store (where you can buy our Sugarland book, too), or you can order it right from Arcadia Publishing. We're happy to support our friends in local history, and we hope you will too.

Speaking of easy soups, especially if you’re under the weather... this is a go to I ADORE from the Bread & Beauty cookbook.
One of the great things about our studio is that we are neighbors with the beautiful Ag Reserve, it’s artists, farmers and open spaces. The book Bread & Beauty captures the community perfectly. Here’s a little bit about our neighbors and the book.

What an unexpected pleasure to see this excerpt from the Bread & Beauty cookbook in the most recent edition of Montgomery Magazine!
Last night I spent part of my evening learning about Montgomery County’s Agricultural reserve, at an event at Red Wiggler Community Farm, along with the authors of the Bread & Beauty cookbook and founders of Plenty Magazine.

It was a great time with delicious food prepared by Watershed Cafe 👨🏻‍🍳 and meaningful conversations with friendly faces from the Clarksburg Chamber of Commerce 😀

Thanks to all who made me feel welcome!
