Another Montgomery County link to culinary history: In 1841, Catherine Beecher wrote "A Treatise on Domestic Economy for the Use of Young Ladies at Home," part of the move toward making housework and cooking part of a scientific and economic system. Her sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, inspired by Josiah Henson's account of being enslaved on a Montgomery County plantation.

Fake Meat Is Not the Panacea Its Producers Claim It To Be

Food and farming are complicated and many of us know to little about land and what we eat.

Silicon Valley-backed “clean meat” is now everywhere. Our guilt over eating meat, we are assured, can be assuaged by consuming nuggets and patties made from plants. This may tempt some, but faux me…

A perfect podcast for Women's History Month and springtime: In Plain Sight includes an episode about Lady Bird Johnson's environmental program that was diminished as "beautification" and called on local responsibility for stewardship in our communities.

"In Plain Sight: Lady Bird Johnson" uncovers Lady Bird's surprisingly powerful role in the Johnson presidency and provides history-making revelations about Lyndon B. Johnson's time in office. We were excited to see that the new book "A Culinary History of Montgomery County, Maryland," includes recollections from Sugarland residents! Its authors, Ellen Letourneau and Claudia Kousoulas, also interviewed Gwen Reese of Sugarland for their previous book, Bread & Beauty, in 2018. Covering everything from colonial farming to the Marriott "hot shoppes" of the 1940s, this informative new book can be found in Poolesville at Locals or the Calleva Store (where you can buy our Sugarland book, too), or you can order it right from Arcadia Publishing. We're happy to support our friends in local history, and we hope you will too. https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/Products/9781467148658
psst ... It's almost Mother's Day! Do you need a last minute gift? Check out what we've got at the Calleva Farm Store: - decadent chocolate fondant - home goods from local artisans - beautiful hand-crafted jewelry - sweet smelling soaps & bath salts - delightful books featuring some of our MoCo Ag Reserve "Sheroes" (Bread & Beauty cookbook + the Lady Farmer Guide to Slow Living) Plus all the usual deliciousness from Calleva Farm.
In this story, Al Spoler heads to Red Wiggler Community Farm, where employees with developmental disabilities help grow food for a Community Supported Agriculture program. Then he talks to local author Claudia Kousoula, who wrote Bread & Beauty, a collection of recipes using local produce!
Speaking of easy soups, especially if you’re under the weather... this is a go to I ADORE from the Bread & Beauty cookbook.
One of the great things about our studio is that we are neighbors with the beautiful Ag Reserve, it’s artists, farmers and open spaces. The book Bread & Beauty captures the community perfectly. Here’s a little bit about our neighbors and the book.

Last night I spent part of my evening learning about Montgomery County’s Agricultural reserve, at an event at Red Wiggler Community Farm, along with the authors of the Bread & Beauty cookbook and founders of Plenty Magazine. It was a great time with delicious food prepared by Watershed Cafe 👨🏻‍🍳 and meaningful conversations with friendly faces from the Clarksburg Chamber of Commerce 😀 Thanks to all who made me feel welcome!
