Skin macerated white wine, amber wine, orange wine…whatever you might know it as, we’re excited to release our newest vintage of Sungold!

Orange wines are thought to have originated from Georgia (the country) but have become popular in recent years as winemakers around the world have begun making them. The simplest way to think about the winemaking process for orange wine is to understand that it is just white grapes, made in a style like they are a red wine. Thus the fermentation takes place for an extended period on the skins and because of this, much more flavor, structure, and phenolic components are picked up than what is typical of a white wine.

Historically, and before the dawn of modern day wine preservatives and temperature control, wines would typically have a long skin contact/maceration in order to extract preservative qualities and antioxidants naturally present in the skins of the grapes. These nutrients and enzymes would not only assist with fermentation health, but could allow the wine to store more reliably over longer periods of time. You could make the argument that most white grapes were actually produced in this orange wine style for thousands of years.

To that end, orange wine has experienced somewhat of a modern-day renaissance, especially in the low-intervention wine community since the style naturally lends itself to production with minimal or no additions. We’re excited to be a tiny part of this orange wine revival, now in our 5th vintage producing the Sungold wine.

Produced with 100% Petit Manseng, the grapes remained on the skins for about two weeks during fermentation. After pressing, the wine finished fermentation in 500 liter neutral French oak barrels and aged for 18 months. We love using Petit Manseng for this wine style with its staple pineapple/tropical aromatics and ripping acidity! 2021 Sungold was produced with zero additives and is neither fined nor filtered.

And it just so happens the release date lined up rather well with the blossoming sunflowers both here at Rocklands (wait until you see the tasting room!) and down the road at McKee Beshers. We look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Next up in our Summer Release Series, we're mixing it up and shining the spotlight on a previous release that pairs perfectly with summer fun. Let us re-introduce you to the 2021 Farmhouse!
Produced with the hybrid grape Chambourcin, this light red is best enjoyed chilled due to low tannin, low alcohol, high acid, and fresh, fruity character. We love the 2021 Farmhouse with burgers or pizza on a hot afternoon. Something about enjoying this wine while the sun is out just feels right ☀️
We'd love to pour you a glass this weekend...hope to see you at Rocklands!

Here’s what we have going on this weekend! ☀️

FRI: This is one show you won’t want to miss, The talented Juliet Lloyd Band is back bringing the musical hits and some originals from 6pm until 9pm Friday night joined by Salat Mediterranean serving up Middle Eastern comfort food like arayes, hummus, and falafal. Food service from 5:30pm until 8:30pm.

SAT: Chef Jarrad Silver joins us with Silver and Sons BBQ, enjoy favorites like short rib pastrami and Creekstone brisket. Check out their menu and why they were named one of the top restaurants in the DC area. They are joined by the popular Dini's Divine Pies, made-from-scratch sweet pies that typically sell out before 5pm. Get them while you can!

SUN: Sunday Funday! And that calls for the perfect pairing. Emma Rossi Wood-Fired Pizza returns to the farm with their Neapolitan-style pizzas baked to perfection, with a slight char, in an authentic “Acunto Mario” wood-fired brick oven imported directly from Naples, Italy. It’s exactly what your taste buds are looking for!

Next up in our Summer Release Series, a multi-year effort to produce Rocklands first vermouths! Wine-based and fortified with Rocklands brandy, our red and white vermouths are aromatized with a collection of herbs, spices, and botanicals. Best enjoyed as a refreshing spritz in our tasting room starting this Saturday!

The base of our white vermouth is 2019 estate-grown Chardonnay, aged for 30 months in barrel. Rocklands brandy was then aromatized with Juniper Berries, Wormwood, Chamomile, Fresh Grapefruit Peel, and Elderflowers among other herbs and spices. The brandy and wine was then combined in a 225L barrel to age another 12 months before bottling in June 2023. Inspired by walks in the meadow.

The base of our red vermouth is 2020 Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in barrel. Rocklands grape brandy was then aromatized with Juniper Berries, Fresh Orange Peel, Toasted Hickory Bark, Yarrow, Ginger, and Burdock Root among other herbs and spices. The brandy and wine was then combined in a 225L barrel to age another 12 months before bottling in June 2023. Inspired by walks in the forest.

Our vermouth spritz combines vermouth (your choice of red or white), Rocklands estate honey syrup, Gerolsteiner sparkling water, and fresh citrus. The perfect way to start your visit on these hot summer days. See you soon!

We're excited to introduce you to our first (very limited) run of Piquettes starting this Saturday at Rocklands! Served extra cold, these bubbly wines clock in around 8% ABV and will be sure to make the hot weather a bit more bearable.

Due to the tiny production, the piquettes will be available by the bottle, glass, and flight (taste all 4!) this weekend only. The remaining piquettes will be sold by the bottle only after this weekend.

Continuing our Summer Release Series, something fizzy and refreshing to combat the incoming summer heat starting this weekend: Piquette! Bottled under our "Workshop" label series, piquette is a low-alcohol sparkling wine made by rehydrating pressed grape must. Here's the full lineup:

2022 Workshop I “Albariño Piquette” - 25 cases produced

2022 Workshop II “Sauvignon Blanc Piquette” - 25 cases produced

2022 Workshop III “Cabernet Franc Piquette” - 25 cases produced

2022 Workshop IV “Fruitquette” - 37 cases produced

Each piquette clocks in around 8% ABV with a light prickle on the palate and a fun and simple expression of the fruit. These small quantities won't last long. Check them out starting this Saturday at noon. See you at the Piquette Party!

Continuing in our summer release series, welcome to the party 2022 Springhouse! Releasing this Saturday at noon in the tasting room and online. 🌼🍏🍉

While the identity of this wine continues to be the foundational hybrid grape Chardonel, this year sees the addition of the highly aromatic Valvin Muscat and alongside a touch of Petit Manseng. Despite the perfumey, almost exotic bouquet, it is indeed a bone dry wine and should pair wonderfully with the warmer weather ahead.

Expect primary notes of white flowers, citrus blossom, and fresh apple alongside secondary vibes of watermelon jolly rancher and a lemon-lime citrus.

We love seeing hybrid grape wine become more and more familiar on the east coast (and really throughout the world), especially as vineyard growing conditions only become more extreme and unpredictable.

See you this weekend to raise a glass to the almighty hybrid!

We've been blown away by the support of this wine these last several years. A fun wine to produce and an early picture of the most recent harvest, 2022 Ancestry hits the tasting room this Saturday. Similar to previous vintages, the 2022 is made with 100% Maryland-grown Chardonnay. Clocking in at just 9.5% ABV this year, an almost addictive creaminess permeates this wine. A lovely match to the bright acidity and notes of pear and apple you've come to expect. Produced with zero additions, this is pure juice! It's also undisgorged and unfiltered, so some sediment and cloudiness is to be expected.

Introducing a new, delicious, and unique addition to our lineup: 2022 Ancestry Rouge!

Produced from a single plot of Petit Verdot in Loudoun County, Virginia and inspired by the Lambrusco of Emilia Romagna, Ancestry Rouge releases in the tasting room this Saturday.  The Ancestry Rouge isn’t overly acidic, presenting a wine that could be enjoyed on its own (chilled) or as a delightful pairing with cured meats, hard cheeses, or pastas as you would with a nice, dry Lambrusco.  Expect classic Petit Verdot notes of dark berry, sage and rosemary, and a bit of green bell pepper. This wine was not disgorged nor filtered so a layer of natural sediment is to be expected.  It was also made without any additions, just pure juice!

Taste it this Saturday alongside its counterpart, the 2022 Ancestry Chardonnay at our Pét-Nat Party starting at 12pm.
