Don’t try this at home. While working at the pumpkin farm, saw this robber fly hanging by its front legs while eating (bee? fly? Not sure), hence the common name, “hanging thief.”

The zinnias are attracting bumble bees to the pumpkin farm. We will need them when the pumpkins start blooming later in the summer.

Bumble bees are great pollinators, visiting blooms at double the speed of other bees. Also, a bumble bee only has to visit a pumpkin bloom twice for maximum pollination, while honey bees (also valuable pollinators) need up to 5 visits for max pollination.

Missouri wildflowers are great for gardens and bouquets. A popular bouquet wildflower is Queen Anne’s Lace (below on left). But be careful of the look alike on the right, Poison Hemlock.

I recently discovered this invasive plant in a fence row. At first I thought it was a robust Queen Anne’s Lace. But after a little research discovered it’s true identity, Poison Hemlock. As few as six leaves ingested can be fatal to a human. All parts of the plant are toxic to all mammals. In Ancient Greece, hemlock was used to execute condemned prisoners, Socrates being the most famous prisoner to be poisoned by hemlock.
