They are activily showing and breeding foundation mares from some of the top Haflinger families in the world. Their Stallion also descends from two of the top Haflingers families in the world. The Shadygrove breeding philosophy is breed for temperament and good family horses first, if they turn out beautiful (which most of them do), then that is a bonus!

These are our horses, vehicles, and friends at the Boone County Fair this year. The slideshow is a bit long, but I wanted to include many of my friends and my favorite photos. It was a really fun week. We had some young horses and great exhibitors really step up.

One more quick post on the new Austrian mare Hannika or "Sassy." I have been trying to figure out the name Hannika. I could find no mention of the name or it's meaning on the Google search machine. We laugh because it reminds us of a Jewish holiday spelled wrong, but I find no evidence that it has anything to do with that. When researching the mare's home farm website in Austria, I found that they spelled her name "Hanika." Hanika is described as a diminutive version of Hanna. Little Hanna. I find this very interesting as my name, John, has hundreds of variations around the world when you include all languages and the feminine and diminutive versions. Hanna is one of them. It's kind of a hobby of mine to collect worldwide variations of my name. Now I know that Hanika is one of them. Maybe I should call her "Little John" -or not- Hanika or Sassy work just fine.

Meet our newest horse, Hannika, known as "Sassy." You can come out and meet Sassy at the Boone County Fair at Belvidere, IL later this week. Sassy has had some wonderful training in Ohio. She was born at a beautiful farm in Austria. I will put pictures of her Austrian home and website in the comments. Sassy was purchased from Suzi Vlietstra and the Sassy Syndicate. The newest version of the Sassy Syndicate features Talayna Steiner, Shady Grove Haflingers, and Valerie St Germain- Peters. Talayna doesn't smile much when riding, but I assure you she is having a blast on this mare.

For 8 yrs we have enjoyed Rollie. He’s the most versatile horse we have ever had the privilege to work with. He was featured in Horse Illustrated (2024) as our breed ambassador for Haflinger versatility. Mr. Versatile excels at farm work, ranch work, English and Western riding, jumping, trails, working cows, hitch driving and pleasure driving. For the last years we have shared him with Talayna Steiner, who has taught him many new things with help from Valerie St Germain- Peters and Tawney Denn. We knew that Talayna and her team could elevate his status as a Breed Ambassador. As Talayna goes off to college, Rollie starts a wonderful new life hitting the trails in California. It’s a beautiful life Rollie deserves. We wish Rollie all the best and support to his new owner, Suzi Vlietstra. Please join us in thanking Talayna for her amazing work and congratulating Suzi on an exciting future with a Super Haflinger. We are always your biggest fans.
