Brick Kiln Landing Farm We sell only what we grow

11/16/2018

Brick kiln landing farm is in transition. Our matriarch Phoebe passed this year. The beef business has relocated to Toano, Dave the farmer had a poor pumpkin crop this season. We rebuilt the dock lost in Isabel, and had some good corn and tomatoes, not enough help for the roadside stand though. Good kale and collards coming now if anyone is interested. We are growing some grandchildren up for dependable labor but they are not quite ready. Call me on Friday or saturdays for kale/collards if you are so inclined. Best send me an email [email protected].

Sweet potatoes, covington variety, are ready. Low harvest this year-too dry. After preorders I have 4 #40 boxes left@ $20. Will be at the stand in the morning Sat about 9am. If you really want some call me cel 757-897-1416. They will disappear quickly.

The Pumpkins are ready and out on the haywagon. First come first served. They have been cured for 3 weeks and should last a month or 2. Honor paybox. Thanks for supporting local produce. The carbon footprint for transporting these is the tractor 1000ft down the lane.

The Market is on holiday this season. The gardner has taken a break, and is busy with maintenance. What he calls "non-remunerative activity". We are planning a fall garden, cabbage and sweet potatoes, broccoli. We will post again when we near harvest. Thank you for thinking locally.

Here's the photo that Dave took of the kale! If it looks good to you, come to the end of the lane today at 3pm. We'll have cabbage, too. There was miscommunication about the collards and he didn't bring any...sorry 'bout that!

Happy New Year to everybody...did you enjoy your holidays? Apparently, we enjoyed them too much and my brother called to say, "Why haven't you come up to get collards...and cabbages...and greens?!!" SO....we'll go up to get them tomorrow! *****edited post....Dave will be at the end of the lane at 3pm on Sunday. The lane is too muddy to have lots of cars. Please let us know if that's inconvenient! See you tomorrow....

We have turnips, if you are interested write. I'm fermenting the cabbage. The first batch of sauerkraut is really good. I you want to try live cultured sauerkraut give me a call I have 3 quarts in the frig. Collards for Christmas are possible, if you ask, I will make a trip to Paytens to get some. We just winterized the engines, and are slowing down the farm to just carrying hay to the herd. Time to plan next year, if you have a request I am always interested in trying something else in our wet soil. The sweet potatoes did well this year, still have some in the root cellar if you are interested. The broccoli did poorly for unknown reasons, last year the heads were as big as my head. Pulled a hamstring jumping off the tractor last week, won't do that again. We are not having Sat markets but as noted above will respond to requests for farm products best we can if you ask. David
