Bees have been officially declared the most important living species on the planet. And once you understand why, you realize this is not sentiment. It is biology.

A third of everything you eat exists because a bee landed on a flower. Almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, coffee, cucumbers, mangoes. Not just the fruits and vegetables but the crops that feed the livestock we eat as well. Scientists estimate bees contribute over 500 billion dollars worth of pollination to the global economy every year. Services no human technology can replicate at scale.

And we are losing them fast.

Beekeepers in the United States have reported losing between 30 and 40 percent of their colonies every single year for the past decade. The causes are well documented. Pesticides that disorient and kill. Habitat destruction removing the wildflowers they depend on. Parasites devastating hives from the inside. Climate change disrupting the timing between when flowers bloom and when bees emerge.

The cruel irony is that the agricultural system bees keep alive is one of the primary forces killing them.

Bees have been on this planet for 100 million years. They survived the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. They survived every mass extinction in Earth's history.

The one thing they may not survive is us.

And the one thing we may not survive is losing them.

A big THANK YOU to our friends at Sequim Bee Farm šŸÆ A platinum sponsor of Sea to Sound. If you are local to the area, you've likely seen Buddy or Meg at farmers markets and events.

What makes Sequim Bee Farm so special? Other than absolutely delicious honey - Sequim Bee Farm was created by Buddy and Meg Depew in 2014. Their mission is to promote and protect honeybee health and welfare. They believe that the backyard beekeeper will be the guardian of the species.

Their goal is to increase the availability of locally produced honey and bee products to their friends and neighbors on the North Olympic Peninsula.

We truly appreciate you Sequim Bee Farm! Thank you for your continued support!
