Rural Hunger Comes With Unique Challenges

When we talk about food insecurity, a big part of the conversation is often the cost of groceries. And this is for good reason. When food prices rise faster than household incomes, putting meals on the table becomes increasingly difficult.

But in Clallam County, the challenge doesn't always end with being able to afford food.

Sometimes, the biggest challenge is finding nutritious food in the first place.

Clallam County is a large, rural region where communities are spread across the Olympic Peninsula. While residents in Port Angeles and Sequim have access to a range of grocery stores and community resources, people living in smaller communities like Joyce, Forks, and Clallam Bay face different challenges.

Hunger doesn't always look the way we imagine it.

It can look like a parent working full-time and still struggling to cover groceries after paying rent. It can look like a senior choosing between food and medication. It can look like a family facing an unexpected car repair that throws their entire monthly budget off balance.

Food insecurity isn't always about having no income. Sometimes, it's about not having enough left after everything else.

At the Port Angeles Food Bank, we believe everyone deserves access to food, regardless of how they got there.

Our shelves are in need of your help!!

The Port Angeles Food Bank is currently completely out of community food donations, and we're asking our community to come together to help restock our shelves as we head into the holiday season.

This October, our Food Drive of the Month is focused on holiday items to help local families enjoy a little extra comfort and joy during the holidays.

Whether you're organizing a drive at work, gathering donations with friends, or contributing on your own, every donation makes a difference. We need our community's support to keep food on the shelves and groceries available for our neighbors.

🥦🍎 In celebration of National School Lunch Week, we’re busting a common misconception about what’s on the tray. 🍎🥦
MYTH: School lunches aren’t healthy.
FACT: School meals are actually among the healthiest meals many children eat! 💚

School breakfasts and lunches must meet nutrition standards designed specifically for growing kids. That means meals include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein and milk - while also meeting limits for things like sodium and saturated fat.
And there’s research behind it! Studies have found that school meals became significantly healthier following updated federal nutrition standards - and that children who eat school meals tend to consume meals with higher nutritional quality than food brought from home or obtained elsewhere.
Here in Port Angeles School District, our Nutrition Services team works hard every day to provide meals that are nutritious, balanced and appealing to students. And remember: breakfast and lunch are available at no cost to ALL PASD students this school year! 🙌
So, the next time your student grabs a school lunch, you can feel good knowing there’s a lot more behind that tray than meets the eye. 🥕🍎🥛

There are 12 Fridays left in the year. Starting today, we will be sharing one blog each week about things people may not know about hunger in our community. We hope you learn, share, and get involved in reducing hunger in Clallam County!

On Tuesday, in celebration of Food Waste Prevention Week, 11 volunteers joined our team and WSU Clallam County Extension to transform 610 pounds of apples into 504 pounds of apple sauce in the Port Angeles Food Bank Kitchen. All of the apples were harvested from local backyards through Clallam Gleaners, the WSU Extension- run program that connects volunteer harvesters with backyard tree fruit that otherwise would go to waste.

The apple saucing party was part of our weekly food processing volunteer program, which is supported by WSU Extension. Every week during peak produce season, volunteers work with WSU Community Health Program coordinator Danielle Carson to process locally grown produce into healthy dips, pickles, salads, soups, sauces, fruit leather and more.

Apple sauce was packed into pints and quarts and will be distributed through The Market, Harm Reduction Health Center and Sequim Food Bank.
