Weekend vibes at the home farm.
I’m still figuring out what the long range vision is for this garden space.
This season Colin and I are growing a bunch of dry beans. The farm is growing some Yacon here. And the greenhouse has some peppers, flowers and basil. It’s also where we grow all our plant starts.
But overall we are just playing with cover crop successions. Last fall we planted a vetch and rye cover crop. We mowed it this spring and the vetch largely took over. A couple weeks ago I undersowed crimson clover. The big question is now, will the mowed vetch smother the crimson clover?
As I have moved away from intensive production, I have watched the snakes thrive. This property has been managed using all no till practices for over 10 years. I use to pull back tarps to find voles running around. Yesterday when I folded back the tarp in picture 3 and found 6 snakes in the space of a 40’ bed!
While I think I do need a new hobby, it’s been fun to garden in my time off. I’m grateful to have a space to play and learn.
