How can you tell if a pumpkin is for eating, or just for decoration?

Short answer: you cannot tell just by looking at a pumpkin, so ask the farmer who grew them!

Pie/cooking pumpkins are grown for eating. They usually have thick, dense, sweet, flavorful flesh and relatively small seed cavities.

Decorative/carving pumpkins are technically edible in most cases, but they’re usually grown for appearance rather than flavor. The flesh can be thin, watery, stringy, or bland, so they don’t make very good pies or purée.

So the BEST way to tell is to ask the farmer who grew them!

At our farm we grow our heirloom pie pumpkins for you because we know they are great for eating!

So if you want the perfect pumpkin for making all the good ol’ fashioned fall comfort food, stop by our farm for a pie pumpkin!!

Pumpkin Coffee Cake Muffins and Pumpkin Chip Cookies, made with our heirloom pie pumpkins, are available in our store today!!

I am so excited to share that Alyssa from blackberrycottage_bakeshoppe just dropped off some delicious baked goods at our farm store.

They are made using our very own heirloom pie pumpkins!

Blackberry Cottage Bake Shoppe is a local micro bakery in Centre County focused on using high quality ingredients to make baked goods nourishing. Her baked goods are made using local, organic and fresh milled ingredients.

Stop in for some of these amazing fall treats! Our farm store is open daily from 8am-8pm. Find us at 7447 S. Eagle Valley Road, Port Matilda, PA 16870.

These yummy treats will be available Wednesday to Saturday (or until sold out).

What’s so special about our heirloom pie pumpkins? They make AMAZING pumpkin pie, that’s true. But there’s much more to these pumpkins! Let me tell you the story ☺️ (pictured: my family after harvesting pie pumpkins in 2001. That’s me in the wagon on the left).

My great great grandmother, Laura Stanton, her husband Henry, moved from Pennsylvania to areas in South Dakota and Nebraska from 1912 to 1918 seeking treatment for Tuberculosis. But they moved back to PA in 1918 after their crops were destroyed by hail. It was during her time in the west that Laura was given these pie pumpkin seeds. Based on family stories and historical research, there is a strong possibility these seeds originated with the Sioux Indians. Laura brought these seeds back to PA with her and passed them on to her daughter Gladys Spackman (my great grandmother).
Gladys grew these pumpkins in her garden on our family farm, and baked lots of pumpkin pies! My grandfather remembers “When my mother gave me some of those seeds, she removed them from a very small and wrinkled brown paper bag stored in a very dry cupboard in her kitchen.”
My Grandfather began growing the seeds in 1972. In 1990 he began to understand the importance of seed saving to preserve these unique pumpkins. He collected seeds and shared them with many growers around the country.
I grew up helping grow and harvest these pie pumpkins. And of course, eating lots of pumpkin pie.We continue to grow these pie pumpkins on our family farm today. Each year we save seeds to grow in future years and to pass on to the next generation to keep these pie pumpkins “alive.” Abbie (Spackman) Kibe. The Heirloom Farmer

These pumpkins are grown specially for eating. They have amazing flavor and a smooth texture, perfect for pies, soup, bread, muffins and more.
